Position Summary

The Associate Director, Data Center Physical Security Systems Engineering is responsible for the strategy, design, implementation, and lifecycle management of all physical security technologies across our global data center portfolio. This role leads a team of engineers and integrators to ensure our facilities meet or exceed corporate, regulatory, and customer security requirements while maintaining high availability and scalability.

The ideal candidate combines deep technical knowledge of physical security systems (ACS, VMS, IDS, PSA, etc.) with strong leadership, program management, and stakeholder engagement skills.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy & Leadership

  • Define and own the technical roadmap for data center physical security systems globally.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of security systems engineers and technicians.
  • Establish and maintain security technology standards, reference architectures, and design guides.
  • Partner with Security Operations, Data Center Operations, Networking, Facilities, and IT to align physical security solutions with business objectives.

Design & Engineering

  • Architect end-to-end physical security solutions for new data centers, expansions, and retrofits, including:
    • Access Control Systems (ACS)
    • Video Management Systems (VMS) and CCTV
    • Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) and alarm monitoring
    • Perimeter protection, barriers, mantraps, turnstiles, and interlocks
    • Visitor management and identity management integrations
    • Create and review drawings, schematics, BOMs, and technical specifications.
    • Ensure designs meet requirements for redundancy, fault tolerance, scalability, and maintainability.
    • Standardize hardware, firmware, and configurations across regions and sites.

    Implementation & Project Delivery

    • Oversee deployment and commissioning of physical security systems for greenfield and brownfield projects.
    • Manage relationships with security integrators, vendors, and contractors; review SOWs, bids, and change orders.
    • Define acceptance testing criteria and sign-off for system handover to operations.
    • Drive continuous improvement in installation quality, documentation, and commissioning processes.

    Operations, Reliability & Compliance

    • Establish performance, availability, and reliability SLAs for security systems; monitor KPIs and drive remediation.
    • Ensure proper integration with Security Operations Centers (SOCs), PSIM/PSA platforms, and incident management tools.
    • Maintain system hardening and patching standards in collaboration with IT and cybersecurity teams.
    • Ensure compliance with internal policies and external standards (e.g., ISO 27001, SOC 2, PCI-DSS, TIA-942, local regulations) as applicable.
    • Champion security-by-design principles in all data center projects.

    Risk Management & Incident Response

    • Collaborate with onsite Security Manager in conducting risk assessments and threat modeling for physical security in data centers and critical infrastructure.
    • Define technical controls to mitigate risks such as unauthorized access, tailgating, insider threat, and perimeter breaches.
    • Provide technical leadership during security incidents related to physical systems; oversee root-cause analysis and corrective actions.
    • Support customer audits, RFP responses, and due diligence related to physical security capabilities.

    Budgeting & Vendor Management

    • Develop and manage capital and operating budgets for security systems across the portfolio.
    • Evaluate and select hardware and software platforms; lead vendor performance reviews and roadmap discussions.
    • Negotiate contracts and service agreements to ensure cost-effective and scalable solutions.

    Qualifications Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Security Technology, Computer Science, or related field; or equivalent experience.
  • 10+ years of experience in physical security systems engineering, with at least 5+ years in data centers, critical infrastructure, or large enterprise environments.
  • 5+ years in a leadership or management role overseeing engineering or technical teams.
  • Hands-on expertise with:
    • Enterprise access control and video management systems (e.g., LenelS2, Genetec, Milestone, C
    • CURE, Honeywell, etc.).
    • Badge and credential technologies (e.g., smart cards, biometrics, mobile credentials).
    • Networked security devices (IP cameras, door controllers, intercoms, sensors).
  • Demonstrated experience designing and deploying security systems at scale across multiple sites or regions.
  • Proven track record managing large, complex projects and cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Strong understanding of networking concepts as they relate to security systems (IP addressing, VLANs, QoS, latency, bandwidth planning).
  • Exceptional documentation, communication, and executive presentation skills.
Preferred

  • Master's degree in Engineering, Security Management, or related discipline.
  • Experience in colocation, cloud service providers, or hyperscale data center environments.
  • Knowledge of relevant standards and best practices (e.g., TIA-942, Uptime Institute, ASIS guidelines).
