Job Description

The National University of Singapore (NUS) is recruiting one full-time staff to be jointly appointed in the Lloyd's Register Foundation Institute for the Public Understanding of Risk (IPUR) and the Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health (SSHSPH). The position is on a research or practice track appointment. In addition to an attractive salary and benefits package, new faculty members may be eligible for a start-up grant to initiate their independent stream of research. Candidates relocating to Singapore may be eligible for subsidised university accommodation. The candidate will be appointed as Lead Scientist at IPUR for its Health and Lifestyle research pillar.

Researchers active in one or more of the following areas are particularly encouraged to apply:

• Health risk communication, including the study and application of theories, models, and empirical methods to understand, design, and evaluate the communication of scientific evidence across diverse populations and socio-cultural contexts
• Health promotion, encompassing strategic, digital, and data-driven approaches to influence health behaviours, including the use of emerging communication technologies and the management of misinformation, disinformation, and infodemics
• Social or behavioural science research on:Determinants of individual and collective health-related decision-making, including cognitive, emotional, cultural, and contextual influences on risk perception, trust, and behaviourMultilevel factors influencing the prevention, control, and mitigation of communicable and non-communicable diseases, including the role of communication, policy, and health systems in shaping population outcomes andThe design, implementation, and evaluation of innovative, scalable community, national, and transnational strategies and interventions that integrate communication, behavioural science, and policy to achieve measurable improvements in socio-behavioural and health outcomes

Job Requirements

Research Track Candidates:

1. Recognised Doctoral degree in a relevant discipline (communications, behavioural studies, sociology, psychology, or other relevant social science disciplines) with strong post-doctoral research records
2. A track record of publishing in high-impact international peer-reviewed journals
3. Experience in leading independent research studies or a key component within larger research programmes
4. Ability to generate and maintain an independent stream of research funding
5. Ability to teach public health courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels
6. Ability to work in multidisciplinary teams
7. Ability to work with culturally diverse populations.

Candidates will need to show a strong commitment to publishing at the highest level and a record of research excellence in theoretically sound, empirically grounded, and policy-relevant research. Applicants whose research and writing focus on risk communication in Asia will have an advantage.

Practice Track Candidates: Candidates should have 3 years or more experience at a senior management level in government, the private sector or media in the analysis and communication of safety and risk.

Impact and Engagement: Applicants should be keen to engage with policy-makers and scholarly communities in Asia and around the world, producing and communicating work that has an impact on the important questions and problems that confront Asia and the contemporary world. IPUR and SSHSPH have a dedicated media team to augment and extend the reach of research to policy-makers and the general public.
