Job Description

Arts Administration Intern (Executive Director Support)

Art Galleries Association Singapore (AGAS)

Company Description

The Art Galleries Association Singapore (AGAS) represents Singapore's gallery sector and works with galleries, artists, collectors, institutions, and public agencies to support the development of Singapore's visual arts ecosystem.

Through initiatives such as Singapore Gallery Month (SGM), industry dialogues, and sector programmes, AGAS supports the community by promoting gallery programmes, connecting members with opportunities, and strengthening collaboration within the arts sector.

This internship offers a practical understanding of how Singapore's gallery ecosystem operates from daily administrative tasks and research to the coordination required for sector-wide initiatives. The intern will work closely with the Executive Director of AGAS, providing behind-the-scenes support while gaining exposure to how the arts sector functions in practice.

Role Description

This internship is based across Singapore rather than within a traditional office environment. Much of the work takes place out in the field visiting galleries, attending exhibition previews, and assisting in meetings with gallerists, artists, and collectors.

The Arts Administration Intern will support the Executive Director in coordinating daily activities and assisting with AGAS programmes and initiatives. The role involves consistent administrative and personal assistantstyle support, offering a clear view of how arts initiatives and partnerships are developed and maintained through daily engagement with key stakeholders.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assisting with coordination of AGAS programmes, meetings, and events
  • Supporting research and documentation related to gallery initiatives, artist practices, and sector programmes
  • Assisting with communications and correspondence with galleries and partners
  • Helping manage schedules, meeting notes, and follow-ups
  • Accompanying the Executive Director to gallery visits, studio visits, exhibition previews, and industry events to provide administrative support
  • Providing logistical and administrative support for AGAS initiatives

This role suits someone who is curious, proactive, and comfortable engaging with people across the arts ecosystem from gallerists and partners to sector stakeholders. You may already find yourself spending weekends visiting exhibitions at Gillman Barracks, Tanjong Pagar Distripark, or other gallery spaces across the city.

AGAS operates in a dynamic environment, so adaptability, openness to new experiences, and a willingness to engage with different perspectives are important. A positive attitude, curiosity, and the ability to think beyond conventional approaches will be valued more than an impressive list of qualifications.

Working Arrangement

The internship follows a 44-hour work week, although working hours are not fixed in a traditional sense. Because many gallery activities and events take place in the evenings or on weekends, the schedule will adjust according to programme timing.

Some weeks may involve attending events in the evenings or on weekends, while other days may begin later depending on the schedule.

The Executive Director values rest as much as productivity; while the schedule may shift with the art world's calendar, the overall workload will follow a reasonable weekly structure.

Important Note

If you are an aspiring artist looking to use this internship to promote your own practice, or if you are seeking a curatorial training opportunity, this position may not be the right fit.

This is primarily an arts administration role focused on supporting the gallery ecosystem. The intern should take pride in the facilitation and logistical work that enables galleries, artists, and partners to thrive.

Qualifications

  • Genuine interest in the arts, galleries, or cultural sector
  • Strong organisational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills; comfortable interacting with gallerists, partners, and industry stakeholders
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative
  • Proficiency in English is required; Mandarin language ability is helpful for regional engagement

Students or recent graduates in arts management, art history, humanities, or communications are welcome to apply.

Curiosity, initiative, and a willingness to learn will matter more than formal titles.

Allowance: SGD 400 per month

Duration: Minimum 3 months

Location: Singapore (various galleries, studios, and event spaces)
