About the Role

The Immersive Reality Lab at the NUS College of Design and Engineering is looking for a Research Engineer or Research Assistant to design, build and test new immersive and interactive systems.

You will take ideas from early concept to working prototype, combining hardware, software and 3D content. You will then test those prototypes with real users. You will work with researchers, designers and industry partners, and you will help publish what the team learns.

Key Responsibilities

Research & System Development

Conduct independent and collaborative research projects aligned with the lab's strategic directions.
Design and implement immersive reality and multimodal interaction.
Contribute to interdisciplinary research bridging HCI, VR/AR, haptics and immersive reality.

Prototyping

Develop functional prototypes of interactive devices.
Build and iterate prototypes
Design 2D and 3D art assets

User Studies & Evaluation

Plan and conduct rigorous user-centered evaluations.
Analyze experimental data and translate findings into design insights and improved system iterations.

Academic Output & Mentorship

Publish research results in leading international venues and present work at major conferences.
Support the lab's research culture through brainstorming, technical discussions, and collaborative development.

Qualifications

i) Bachelor/Master degree in Computer Science, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Design or a closely related discipline.

ii) Research focuses on one or more of the following areas:

immersive reality
embodied AI
interactive systems
multimodal HCI and immersive interaction

iii) Strong programming skill. Demonstrated hands-on experience in prototyping, including:

Unity
VR/AR/MR
microcontroller platforms (e.g., Arduino, ESP32, STM32)
3d modelling

iv) Expertise in real-time interactive system integration (Unity, VR hardware)

v) Open to Fixed Term Contract
