Role Objective
TheWintelL1 Engineer providesfirst-level operational supportfor enterprise Windows servers, virtualization platforms, and associated infrastructure in a Day-2 operations environment. The role focuses onmonitoring, incident triage, routine administration, backup checks, patch support, and compliance executionfollowing approved runbooks and escalation procedures.
Key Responsibilities
1. Server Operations (Windows /Wintel)
- Perform Day-2 operational support for physical and virtual Windows servers.
- Monitor server health, availability, CPU, memory, disk, and service status.
- Execute routine administrative tasks such as:
- Service restarts
- Disk space cleanup
- Log review and housekeeping
- Scheduled job monitoring
- Manage basic user and group access as per approved requests and SOPs.
- Maintain operational documentation, checklists, and activity logs.
2. Incident Management (L1)
- Act asfirst point of contactfor server-related incidents.
- Monitor alerts and events from monitoring tools and take initial corrective action.
- Log, categorize, prioritize, and track incidents in ITSM tools.
- Perform basic troubleshooting using runbooks and known error procedures.
- Escalate incidents to L2/L3 teams with proper logs, screenshots, and diagnostics.
- Participate in bridge calls and provide timely updates during incidents.
3. Virtualization Support (L1)
- Monitor VMware ESXi hosts, clusters, and virtual machines.
- Perform basic VM operations:
- Start / stop / reboot VMs
- Snapshot monitoring (as per policy)
- Resource utilization checks
- Support validation activities after host or cluster maintenance.
- Escalate performance, availability, or capacity issues to L2 teams.
4. Storage & SAN Support (L1 Assisted)
- Monitor storage availability, latency, and capacity alerts.
- Support storage provisioning tasks under guidance (ticket execution only).
- Assist in SAN-related activities such as access validation and health checks.
- Escalate storage incidents with relevant metrics and error details.
- Maintain storage-related operational records and evidence.
5. Patch Management Support
- Support monthly and emergency patching activities for:
- Windows OS
- Virtual machines
- Server firmware (execution support)
- Perform pre-patch and post-patch health checks.
- Validate patch success and update compliance records.
- Escalate patch failures or anomalies to senior engineers.
6. Backup & Recovery Monitoring
- Monitor daily backup jobs using enterprise backup tools (e.g., Commvault).
- Identify and remediate common backup failures as per SOPs.
- Re-run failed jobs where applicable and escalate unresolved issues.
- Support restore testing and recovery exercises under supervision.
- Maintain backup status reports and evidence for audits.
7. Security & Compliance Support
- Ensure servers comply with approved hardening baselines.
- Support vulnerability remediation tasks as instructed.
- Monitor antivirus, endpoint security, and certificate alerts.
- Assist in audit activities by collecting logs, screenshots, and compliance data.
- Follow strict access control, approval, and change governance processes.
8. Change & Maintenance Support
- Execute approved low-risk changes under guidance.
- Support scheduled maintenance activities including:
- Server reboots
- Patch windows
- Planned shutdown/startup
- Perform post-change validation to confirm service restoration.
- Update change records with execution notes and evidence.

- Enterprise storage (monitoring & alert handling)
- Commvault or similar backup tools (job monitoring)
