A leading global firm in the commodity sector is seeking a strategic leader for its Southeast Asian operations. The organization is a market-focused entity committed to securing and expanding its asset base and commercial position in Indonesia/Malaysia.

about the job

This is a Principal-level role that acts as the key interface between the global headquarters and the regional business units.

  • Identify, vet, and execute high-value commercial and investment opportunities, including greenfield projects, M&A, and securing exclusive commodity offtake agreements for metals (Nickel, Copper, etc.) or agricultural products

  • Function as the primary corporate representative, cultivating and maintaining critical relationships with government agencies, regulatory bodies, and influential industry partners to enable business permits and policy advocacy

  • Lead and conclude complex, multi-party negotiations for joint ventures, lease agreements, and major supply/procurement contracts, ensuring favourable terms that align with global financial and legal mandates

  • Proactively manage and mitigate the spectrum of local risks-including political, policy, community, and compliance risks-ensuring all office and project operations strictly adhere to local laws and global corporate governance standards

  • Direct and oversee the daily operations of the local office, ensuring effective resource allocation, cost control, and business continuity across challenging and uncertain operating environments

  • Build, mentor, and unify diverse, high-performing local teams while effectively adapting to and coordinating workflows

  • Develop, articulate, and present the multi-year strategic development blueprint for the Southeast Asian market to the executive committee, monitoring key performance indicators and advising on major policy shifts

skills and experience required

  • 10+ years of demonstrable experience in the commodity trading sector, with deep domain knowledge of the entire industry chain (exploration, mining, processing, and trading) for metals (e.g., Nickel, Copper, Tin, Aluminum) or strong equivalent experience in agricultural trading

  • Proven success in commercial strategy, market access, or investment within a complex regulatory environment.

  • Highly developed business acumen with strong proficiency in financial analysis and sophisticated cross-border negotiation.

  • Intimate working familiarity with a challenging political, regulatory, and legal business landscape.

  • Demonstrated ability to handle compliance audits, secure necessary permits, and manage local policy engagement effectively.
