A newspaper for the local Malay community, Berita Harian was established on July 1, 1957. It presents news and issues from home, the region and the world, featuring a wide spectrum of topics from sports to politics and religion. Other highlights include Malay culture and tradition, arts and heritage, family, hobbies and leisure. Berita Harian also provides a platform for the Malay community to voice their views on issues that concern them. It is a paper that speaks with authority and understands the needs of the Malay community.

About the Role

Berita Harian is seeking a versatile and experienced visual journalist who can bring stories to life through compelling visual storytelling, including illustrations, animated visuals, data-driven graphics, and short-form video content.

We're seeking someone who can work independently, identify visual angles in news and features, and has a strong understanding of the Malay-speaking audience.

You'll work closely with editors and reporters, but you'll also be expected to drive your visual narratives and pitch creative ideas.

Job Responsibilities

• Conceptualise, create and produce illustrations, infographics, motion graphics, and short-form videos for Berita Harian's digital and print platforms.
• Work alongside journalists to translate complex news stories into engaging visual formats.
• Produce visual content that resonates with Malay-speaking audiences across various topics, including community affairs, current issues, lifestyle, and commentary.
• Develop and lead your own visual-first stories, including explainer videos, social content, and editorial art pieces.
• Stay ahead of visual trends and platforms to ensure Berita Harian's visuals remain fresh and relevant.
• Ensure visuals are brand-aligned, culturally sensitive, and platform-appropriate (especially for Instagram, TikTok, and website).
• Work independently with minimal supervision, from ideation to execution.

Job Requirements

• A diploma or degree in a relevant field.
• Proficiency in design and video tools: Adobe Creative Suite (especially Illustrator, After Effects, Premiere Pro), Figma, or equivalents.
• Strong storytelling instincts and an understanding of news values.
• Ability to communicate fluently in Malay and English (spoken and written) — fluency in Malay is essential.
• A solid portfolio showcasing both visual art and journalistic thinking.
• Excellent time management and ability to handle multiple deadlines.
• Self-starter attitude — comfortable owning and driving projects independently.
• Proven experience in journalism, illustration, and motion graphics — ideally in a newsroom or editorial setting will be advantageous.
• Candidates who have experience with data visualisation, social-first content, or interactive graphics have an added advantage
