Job Description

At Barclays, you will be part of the Intraday Risk and PnL Platform Technology team.

Barclays is one of the world's largest and most respected financial institutions, with 329 years of success, quality and innovation behind us. We offer careers that provide endless opportunity - helping millions of individuals and businesses thrive, and creating financial and digital solutions that the world now takes for granted.

What will you be doing/ What we're looking for:

Overall Purpose of the Role

Engineering Lead for business-critical Intraday Risk and PnL platforms for the Macro business within an investment banking environment. This is a hands-on senior engineering role requiring deep expertise in low-latency, high-throughput distributed systems, advanced caching and grid technologies, and complex market risk and PnL domain concepts.

The role involves close partnership with front office, product control and risk stakeholders. The successful candidate will be expected to drive delivery, ensure platform stability and scalability, and respond effectively to evolving business demands in a fast-paced, front-office environment.

Key Accountabilities:

. Design and deliver high-quality, scalable software components for intraday risk generation, aggregation, and distribution, meeting stringent latency, accuracy, and availability requirements across business-critical platforms.

. Provide technical leadership for performance engineering across the end-to-end stack (CPU, memory, GC, network, cache/grid, and database), establishing best practices in profiling, benchmarking, and capacity planning to ensure consistent low-latency performance at scale.

. Own Level 3 production support for intraday risk and PnL services, leading incident response, root cause analysis, and permanent remediation, while driving continuous improvements in platform stability, observability, and operational resilience.

. Lead development across multiple codebases and technology stacks (C++ and Java), setting technical direction and ensuring consistency of design, standards, and engineering practices across asset classes and domains.

. Act as a trusted technology partner to Front Office traders, desk heads, Market Risk, and business stakeholders, shaping solutions by translating complex trading workflows and risk controls into robust, scalable, and extensible systems.

. Champion engineering excellence across the team, driving high standards in code quality, architecture, design reviews, automated testing, CI/CD adoption, and secure coding practices.

. Influence and guide Agile delivery at team level, contributing to sprint planning, estimation, and prioritisation while fostering continuous improvement, predictability, and disciplined execution.

. Mentor and develop engineers within the team, promoting a culture of accountability, technical depth, and continuous learning, while contributing to broader platform and engineering strategy.

Working Style:

. Takes end‑to‑end ownership and drives outcomes with urgency and discipline.

. Operates effectively across global teams and time zones communicates clearly with technical and non‑technical stakeholders.

. Balance space with quality, ensuring robust engineering and controlled delivery.

Risk and Control Objective:

Ensure all activities are carried out in line with Barclays technology standards, secure coding practices and the firm's risk and control framework. Demonstrate strong ownership for production resilience, operational risk reduction, audit readiness and continuous improvement in a regulated Front Office environment.

Person Specification

Essential Skills/Basic Qualifications:

. 20+ years of hands-on software engineering experience delivering mission-critical trading, risk, and pricing platforms within investment banking or similarly complex environments.

. Strong experience designing, building, and supporting intraday risk management platforms, including direct ownership of production systems used by Front Office trading desks, with a focus on correctness, resilience, and availability.

. Proven track record operating in low-latency, high-throughput environments, with a deep understanding of performance trade-offs and the ability to design for predictable tail latency under load.

. Extensive experience working across multiple codebases and technology stacks (notably C++ and Java), leading and contributing across Macro asset classes while adapting rapidly to evolving business and production demands.

. C++: Expert-level proficiency in modern C++ (C++11/14/17+), including memory management, concurrent and lock-free programming, and low-latency optimisation, with strong capability in profiling and micro-optimising production systems.

. Java: Strong server-side engineering expertise for high-throughput distributed systems, including concurrency models, JVM tuning (GC, memory), performance profiling, and production troubleshooting at scale.

. Distributed Cache / Grid Technologies(Oracle Coherence, Redis): Extensive production experience covering partitioning strategies, data model design, caching patterns, entry processors, cluster tuning, hot-key mitigation, and failure analysis.

. HPC / Grid Compute: Solid understanding of distributed compute architectures, parallelism, scheduling models, and end-to-end performance optimisation, including compute-to-cache interaction for intraday risk workloads.

. Database / SQL: Advanced SQL and data engineering skills, including complex query design, execution plan analysis, schema design, indexing strategies, and performance tuning in high-volume environments.

. Linux / Systems Engineering: Strong Linux expertise for production diagnostics and performance analysis (CPU, memory, threads, networking), combined with scripting and automation to drive system optimisation.

. CI/CD & Engineering Tooling: Experience owning build and release pipelines (e.g., TeamCity), including branching strategies, release governance, and automated quality controls for reliable delivery.

. Python: Strong capability in Python for automation, diagnostics, data analysis, and improving engineering productivity, particularly in production support contexts.

. Delivery & Ways of Working: Deep experience in Agile environments, leveraging tools such as JIRA to drive structured, traceable, and predictable delivery across complex, multi-team programmes.

. Strong practitioner-level understanding of Macro products (FX, Rates, Inflation, Bonds, Futures) and the ability to operate effectively across asset classes in a front-office context.

. Deep knowledge of market risk concepts, including DV01, sensitivities, Greeks, scenario analysis, stress testing, and risk aggregation, with the ability to translate these into scalable system designs.

. Advanced understanding of intraday PnL, including PnL explain, real-time PV/Delta, multi-entity and currency considerations, and a strong reconciliation mindset to ensure accuracy and consistency.

. Proven ability to partner closely with Front Office stakeholders, rapidly interpret trading intent, and deliver solutions under time pressure while clearly articulating risks and trade-offs.

. Strong appreciation of front-office operating models, including intraday risk workflows, control frameworks, and the importance of timeliness, accuracy, and system resilience indecision-making.

Desired Skills

. Experience with real‑time feeds/APIs to dashboards and front‑office UIs, including streaming patterns and high‑volume request handling.

. Experience implementing risk transformations / derived metrics pipelines and ensuring consistency across intraday and EOD views.

. Experience modernising legacy platforms (decomposition, decoupled releases, observability, resilience engineering) without compromising production stability.
