Job Summary

The University Career Guidance Counsellor provides structured academic, university, and career guidance to students in Secondary, IGCSE, and IB Diploma programmes.
The primary focus of the role is to support students in informed subject selection, university applications, and post-secondary pathway planning, while contributing to student wellbeing and personal development in alignment with international school standards.

Responsibilities

University & Career Guidance (Primary Focus)

  • Provide a comprehensive university counselling to IGCSE and IB Diploma students, including course selection, university research, application planning, and submission processes (e.g.,UCAS, Common App, direct applications)
  • Guide students in personal statement development, portfolio preparation, and interview readiness
  • Prepare and coordinate school references and academic documentation
  • Track application timelines, scholarship opportunities, and admissions requirements across global systems
  • Organise university fairs, career talks, and parent information sessions
  • Advise students on subject selection aligned with career aspirations and university entry requirements
  • Academic & Developmental Guidance
  • Design and implement structured guidance programmes aligned with Secondary, IGCSE, and IB pathways
  • Conduct individual and group advisory sessions focused on academic planning and future readiness
  • Support students in goal-setting, decision-making, and transition planning
  • Student Wellbeing & Safeguarding (Supportive Component)
  • Provide first-line social-emotional support where necessary
  • Identify students requiring additional support and collaborate with teachers, parents, and leadership
  • Maintain confidential records in compliance with safeguarding and data protection policies
  • Contribute to safeguarding and student protection initiatives
  • Community Engagement & Professional Contribution
  • Conduct workshops for students and parents on university pathways, resilience, and career readiness
  • Participate in school events, assemblies, meetings, and professional development
  • Promote and embody the IB Learner Profile attributes and school values

Required competencies and certifications

  • Minimum two (2) years of relevant full-time experience in university guidance, career counselling, or school counselling
  • Bachelor's degree in Counselling, Psychology, Education, Career Guidance, or related discipline
  • Recognised counselling qualification or professional certification (where applicable)
  • Demonstrated experience in university admissions processes (UK, US, Australia, Canada, etc.)
  • High proficiency in spoken and written English
  • Strong interpersonal and stakeholder engagement skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional discretion
  • ICT literacy for database management and application tracking systems

Preferred competencies and qualifications

  • Experience in an International school environment
  • Familiarity with IB and Cambridge curriculum frameworks
  • Experience supporting IGCSE and IB Diploma university applications
  • Training in safeguarding or child protection
