About the role

The Just-in-Time AI lab at NUS School of Computing is hiring a part-time Research Assistant (UX/UI Designer) to design interactive, AI-supported systems for research discovery, knowledge exploration, and interdisciplinary collaboration. You'll design web-based interfaces that help people navigate large, complex information landscapes — surfacing connections between people and ideas through clear, data-rich visualisations. You'll work hands-on under the guidance of a postdoctoral researcher, building a strong portfolio at the intersection of design, visual analytics, and human-centred AI.

About the lab

We build prudent AI for high-stakes, data-scarce settings — interpretable, auditable systems for anomaly detection, time-series modelling, and trustworthy NLP, with work published at ICLR, ACL, EMNLP, ICDE, and VLDB. A through-line runs through all of it: making model reasoning legible to people, so a person can see and trust the evidence. This role contributes directly to that human-facing layer.

What you'll do

  • Design interactive interfaces for information exploration, sensemaking, and decision support
  • Create polished, data-rich analytical and visualisation views
  • Translate complex, multi-dimensional information into clear, adaptive interfaces
  • Iterate on designs based on feedback and usability evaluation

What we're looking for (required)

  • A strong UX/UI portfolio for web applications or AI interactive systems
  • Proficiency with Figma or equivalent design tools
  • Solid grounding in information-visualisation principles and tools (e.g. D3.js)
  • Ability to turn complex data into intuitive, effective interfaces

Nice to have

  • Background in HCI, visual analytics, or human-centred AI
  • Experience with data-rich, AI-assisted, or analytical interfaces
  • Front-end prototyping in React/Vue, JavaScript, HTML/CSS

  • Hours, eligibility & pay

    • Open to current full-time NUS undergraduate students
    • 14 hours/week during term; up to 35 hours/week during semester breaks (temporary; subject to revision)
    • International undergraduates: capped at 16 hours/week during term per NUS/MOM rules — this role sits within that limit
    • Paid at NUS Student Work Scheme (NSWS) rates, set by your level of study

    How to apply

    • Email your CV, portfolio link, and GitHub (include any information-visualisation or D3.js work) to [Confidential Information].
