UAS Field Engineer (Unmanned Aircraft Systems)
The UAS Field Engineer is responsible for supporting unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) operations in field environments, ensuring reliable system performance through hands-on troubleshooting, integration, testing, and technical support. This role bridges flight operations and engineering, working closely with pilots/operators, engineering teams, and customers to deploy and sustain UAS platforms and payload systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide field engineering support for UAS deployments, flight tests, demonstrations, and operational missions.
- Conduct pre-flight and post-flight inspections, system checks, and mission readiness verification.
- Configure and operate ground control stations (GCS), communications links, and mission planning software.
- Troubleshoot and resolve UAS system issues in the field (aircraft, payload, software, datalink, power systems).
- Support integration and validation of payloads (EO/IR cameras, LiDAR, mapping sensors, RF payloads, etc.).
- Execute test procedures, collect flight/test data, and document results for engineering review.
- Perform field-level maintenance and repairs, including component swaps, calibration, and system verification.
- Maintain accurate logs for flight operations, maintenance actions, and technical incidents.
- Support customer training and provide technical guidance during deployments.
- Coordinate with engineering teams to report defects, recommend improvements, and support product updates.
Required Qualifications
- Degree in Engineering, Aerospace, Electrical/Electronics, Mechanical, Mechatronics, Robotics, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience supporting technical systems in field operations (UAS, aviation systems, robotics, telecom, military systems, or similar).
- Working knowledge of UAS components and subsystems (airframe, propulsion, batteries, avionics, GCS).
- Strong troubleshooting skills with electrical/mechanical systems.
- Ability to read technical manuals, wiring diagrams, and integration documents.
- Comfortable working outdoors and traveling to deployment sites as required.
- Strong documentation and reporting skills.
- Ability to work independently under time pressure in mission environments.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with mission planning software and GCS platforms.
- Basic understanding of networking and communications (RF, telemetry, datalink concepts).
- Familiarity with payload integration (cameras/sensors) and calibration.
- Experience with field testing, verification/validation, or test reporting.
- Drone pilot/operator experience (civilian or military).
- Familiarity with aviation safety procedures and standard operating protocols.
- Experience with PX4 and Ardupilot
