We are seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to lead a high-performing team of 8–10 C++ and Python engineers within a systematic trading firm operating at the forefront of low-latency, high-frequency trading (HFT).
This is a leadership role for an engineer who enjoys staying close to the technology while operating primarily as a manager, architect, and delivery leader. You will be responsible for setting the technical direction of the core engineering team, building a high-performance engineering culture, and ensuring the reliable delivery of systems where performance, latency, scalability, and correctness are critical.
The role is approximately 20% hands-on technically, with the majority of your time focused on people leadership, architecture, technical strategy, and driving execution across the team.
What You'll Do
- Lead, mentor, and develop a globally distributed team of 8–10 C++ and Python engineers.
- Set clear technical direction and engineering priorities aligned with the firm's trading and technology strategy.
- Own the architecture and evolution of core engineering systems supporting systematic and low-latency trading.
- Drive delivery across the team, ensuring projects are well-defined, prioritised, and executed to a high standard.
- Work closely with quantitative researchers, traders, infrastructure engineers, and senior technology leadership.
- Maintain a strong focus on performance, latency, reliability, scalability, and operational excellence.
- Remain technically engaged through approximately 20% hands-on contribution, including architecture, design reviews, technical investigations, and occasional coding where it adds value.
- Build a culture of ownership, accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Recruit, retain, and develop exceptional engineering talent across multiple locations and time zones.
- Communicate effectively with both highly technical stakeholders and senior business leadership.
What We're Looking For
- Significant experience managing and developing software engineering teams, ideally in a high-performance technology, trading, financial services, or similarly demanding environment.
- Strong professional experience with modern C++, ideally in performance-critical or low-latency systems.
- Solid experience with Python and the ability to lead teams working across both C++ and Python.
- A strong understanding of software architecture, distributed systems, concurrency, performance engineering, and systems design.
- Experience leading globally distributed or geographically diverse engineering teams.
- A proven track record of delivering complex, business-critical engineering projects.
- The ability to operate effectively at both strategic and technical levels.
- Excellent communication, prioritisation, and stakeholder management skills.
- A genuine interest in developing people and building exceptional engineering teams.
