Roles & Responsibilities
The Technical Superintendent is responsible for ensuring the safe, efficient, reliable, and cost-effective technical management of assigned bulk carriers and/or container vessels. The role oversees vessel maintenance, regulatory compliance, budget management, and technical performance while supporting operational excellence and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the technical operations of assigned vessels to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient performance in accordance with company objectives.
- Implement and maintain the Company's Safety and Quality Management System (SQMS), ensuring full compliance by assigned vessels.
- Monitor adherence to company policies, procedures, and applicable statutory, flag state, class, and international maritime regulations.
- Review, develop, and continuously improve technical and operational procedures to enhance fleet performance.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on safety, operational reliability, environmental protection, and cost efficiency.
- Monitor vessel performance, machinery condition, maintenance schedules, and overall technical integrity.
- Work closely with Masters and Chief Engineers to resolve technical issues and provide timely operational support.
- Plan, coordinate, and supervise routine maintenance, emergency repairs, statutory surveys, class inspections, and dry-docking projects.
- Ensure vessels maintain valid statutory and class certificates and comply with all applicable international conventions and regulatory requirements.
- Develop, manage, and monitor vessel operating budgets, ensuring effective expenditure control and cost optimisation.
- Oversee technical procurement activities, ensuring the timely supply of spare parts, equipment, and engineering services.
- Coordinate with crewing departments to ensure vessels are adequately manned in compliance with regulatory and operational requirements.
- Prepare and submit technical, operational, and financial reports to vessel owners in accordance with Ship Management Agreements and reporting requirements.
- Promote a proactive safety culture while encouraging environmental stewardship and energy-efficient vessel operations.
- Provide technical advice and guidance to Masters, Chief Engineers, and shipboard personnel on engineering and maintenance matters.
- Liaise with classification societies, flag administrations, shipyards, equipment manufacturers, contractors, suppliers, and other external stakeholders.
- Conduct regular vessel visits, inspections, and audits to assess technical condition, verify compliance, and monitor the completion of corrective actions.
Requirements
- A recognised Degree in Marine Engineering or a related maritime discipline with at least three years of relevant seagoing or shore-based experience in the shipping industry or
- A valid Chief Engineer Certificate of Competency (CoC) with a minimum of two years sailing experience as Chief Engineer or
- At least two years of experience as a Technical Superintendent with a shipowner or ship management company.
- Proven experience managing bulk carriers and/or container vessels.
- Strong knowledge of vessel technical management, planned maintenance systems (PMS), machinery operations, repairs, dry-docking, and statutory compliance.
- Sound understanding of international maritime regulations, classification society requirements, flag-state regulations, and industry best practices.
- Experience in technical procurement, budget preparation, cost monitoring, and expenditure control.
- Strong analytical, organisational, planning, and problem-solving skills with the ability to make sound technical decisions.
- Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively under pressure.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build effective working relationships with both shipboard and shore-based personnel.
- Proficient in written and spoken English.
- Familiarity with safety, environmental, and quality management systems (e.g. ISM Code, ISO management systems) will be an advantage.
