Role Description
A Technical Program Director is responsible for leading large-scale technology programs and ensuring that multiple technical projects are delivered successfully. This role bridges business strategy and technical execution, coordinating teams, resources, timelines, and budgets.
Key responsibilities include:
- Lead and oversee complex technical programs across multiple teams or departments
- Define program strategy, roadmap, and long-term technology goals
- Coordinate with engineering, product, operations, and executive leadership
- Manage project timelines, budgets, and resource allocation
- Identify risks and implement mitigation strategies
- Ensure alignment between technical initiatives and business objectives
- Monitor program performance using KPIs and reporting metrics
- Guide program managers, project managers, and technical leads
- Ensure quality, security, and compliance standards are met
- Drive continuous improvement in program delivery processes
Qualifications
Typical requirements for a Technical Program Director include:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or related field
- 10+ years of experience in technology, program management, or software development
- Strong experience managing large-scale technical programs or digital transformation projects
- Deep understanding of software development lifecycle (SDLC) and agile methodologies
- Proven leadership and stakeholder management skills
- Experience managing cross-functional and distributed teams
- Strong problem-solving, strategic planning, and decision-making abilities
- Excellent communication and presentation skills
- Experience with project/program management tools (Jira, Asana, MS Project, etc.)
- PMP, PgMP, Agile, or Scrum certifications are often preferred
