Teaching Asssistant

Job Description:
The Assistant Teacher (SEN Support) is responsible to the Head of School for supporting high-quality teaching, learning and student well-being across the school, in alignment with the School's Vision, Mission, Values and strategic priorities.

The role involves working closely with teachers and the wider school team to support students with diverse learning needs, helping to create inclusive, engaging and well-supported learning environments where students can access learning successfully and develop confidence and independence.

Working collaboratively with class teachers, Therapy and Pastoral Care (TPC) staff and school leaders, the Assistant Teacher supports the implementation of personalised strategies, interventions and classroom adaptations that respond to the individual needs of students.

The role contributes to a safe, respectful and inclusive learning environment, while supporting the holistic development of all learners.

Responsibilities:
1. Student Support and Learning

. Support students within lessons to access learning and engage successfully in classroom activities.
. Work with individual students and small groups under the guidance of the class teacher.
. Assist in implementing personalised learning strategies and classroom accommodations.
. Support students with organisation, attention, communication, emotional regulation and task completion where required.
. Reinforce teacher instructions and help break learning into manageable steps for students.
. Encourage student independence, confidence and resilience.
. Promote positive engagement and participation within lessons and school activities.
. Support practical, social and emotional development alongside academic learning.

2. Inclusive Practice & Well-being

. Support inclusive practices for students with diverse learning needs (e.g., autism, ADHD, learning differences).
. Build positive and respectful relationships with students based on trust, consistency and encouragement.
. Help maintain a calm, safe and supportive learning environment.
. Support students with emotional regulation and transitions throughout the school day.
. Implement behaviour support strategies in line with school expectations and student support plans.
. Work collaboratively with teachers and TPC staff to support student well-being and development.
. Maintain student dignity, confidentiality and emotional safety at all times.

3. Classroom & Teacher Support

. Support teachers in preparing learning materials and classroom resources.
. Assist with classroom organisation and maintaining an effective learning environment.
. Support supervision during lessons, break times, transitions, activities or school events where required.
. Assist with monitoring student progress and providing feedback to teachers.
. Contribute to observations and discussions regarding student development and support needs.
. Help facilitate practical, creative or hands-on learning activities where appropriate.

4. Communication & Collaboration

. Work collaboratively with teachers, TPC staff and school leaders to support student learning and well-being.
. Participate in meetings, training and professional learning opportunities as required.
. Maintain professional and respectful communication with students, staff and parents.
. Contribute positively to the wider school culture and team environment.

5. Professional Responsibilities

. Uphold professional standards and act as a positive role model within the school community.
. Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all aspects of the role.
. Engage in ongoing professional learning and development.
. Follow safeguarding, health and safety, and school policies and procedures at all times.
. Support school activities, events and programmes where required.

Homeroom Responsibilities:
1. Pastoral Lead

Build strong relationships, establish clear expectations and support positive behaviour.

• Consistent routines and expectations evident across lessons and transitions

• Classroom environment is organised, purposeful and reflects current learning

• Behaviour is managed proactively with clear follow-through and minimal escalation

2. Teaching & Developmental Oversight

Deliver core curriculum and maintain oversight of progress across subjects.

• Planning shows clear progression, differentiation and alignment with curriculum expectations

• Regular review of student work and assessment data across subjects

• Concerns identified early and acted upon (e.g. intervention, discussion with specialists)

3. Family Communication

Serve as the primary contact for parents regarding overall progress and wellbeing.

• Timely and professional responses to parent communication

• Termly reviews/reporting are accurate, clear and aligned with school expectations

• Communication reflects a balanced view of progress, wellbeing and next steps

4. Collaboration & Professional Practice

Ensure alignment across staff and consistency in student support.

• WISPs are implemented consistently and referenced in planning and support

• Effective communication with subject teachers and therapy teams (evidence of follow-up)

• Registers, records and classroom environment are consistently maintained to a high standard

Requirements:

• Minimum Diploma or Degree in Education, Special Educational Needs, Psychology, Child Development or a related field

• Experience working with children or young people with diverse learning needs

• Understanding of inclusive education practices and student support strategies

• Ability to build positive relationships with students and staff

• Calm, patient and flexible approach to supporting students

• Strong communication and interpersonal skills

• Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment

• Good organisational and classroom support skills
