Job Description

UWCSEA East seeks a Teacher of Middle School Learning Support to create a safe, supportive, and evidence-informed learning environment in which all students can thrive.

The ideal candidate will have recent Middle School teaching experience, relevant qualifications in supporting students with learning differences, and a strong commitment to inclusive practices.

Main Responsibilities

  • Provide targeted support for students through academic coaching (one-to-one) and small-group interventions within the MTSS tiered support model, including academic interventions.
  • Collaboratively set student goals, plan coaching sessions, design instruction, and monitor progress.
  • Help students understand their learning profile and develop effective self-advocacy skills, including interpreting results from formal evaluations.
  • Team teach with classroom teachers in various subject areas to meet intensive support needs.
  • Promote positive relationships and student wellbeing.
  • Consult and co-plan with classroom teachers and departments on universal strategies to support learners across the programme.
  • Work with Learning Support leadership, Student Support Services, and Middle School leadership to identify and monitor students in need of support.
  • Build strong professional relationships across the Middle School and whole-school support teams.
  • Collaborate with Middle and High School Learning Support teams to refine coaching practice and deliver evidence-based literacy interventions.
  • Use data from multiple sources to track student progress and wellbeing.
  • Conduct and analyze educational and diagnostic assessments (including Level B) to inform practice, prioritize support, and prepare exam access arrangements.
  • Participate in Admissions assessments and make placement recommendations.
  • Maintain student records in line with department policy.
  • Write learning plans that outline student needs, goals, and progress for teachers and families, and to support applications for access arrangements.
  • Uphold strict confidentiality regarding student and family circumstances.
  • Communicate effectively with students and parents to ensure learning is fully supported.
  • Support smooth student transitions from Middle to High School.

Person Specifications

  • A relevant degree, recognised teaching qualification, and learning support qualification.
  • Significant Middle School Learning Support experience and willingness to teach across the full age range. EAL experience is also preferred.
  • Proven ability to design and deliver individualised instruction and small-group interventions, monitor progress, and support both students needing access and those requiring challenge.
  • Commitment to professional learning and the use of evidence-based support models.
  • Strong collaboration skills within the Middle School Learning Support team and wider Student Support Services.
  • A strengths-based, inclusive philosophy, with the ability to engage students, build positive relationships with parents and teachers, and foster enthusiasm for learning.
  • Ability to design concept-based learning experiences that challenge and support diverse learners, guided by the UWCSEA Learning Principles.
  • Proactive communication with parents about student progress.
  • Willingness to contribute fully to the five elements of a UWCSEA education: Academics, Activities, Outdoor Education, Personal and Social Education, and Service. This includes:
  • On average, two sessions per week per season in Activities and/or Service.
  • Enthusiastic participation in curricular Outdoor Education experiences and, where possible, volunteering for holiday Outdoor Education or Service trips.
