Job Description

Job Purpose

The System Safety Engineer is responsible for ensuring the safety, reliability, and compliance of naval and marine systems throughout the project lifecycle. This role conducts hazard identification, risk assessments, safety analyses, and verification activities to ensure vessel systems meet contractual, regulatory, and operational safety requirements. The incumbent works closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams to integrate safety considerations into system designs, supporting the delivery of safe and mission-ready maritime platforms.

Key Responsibilities

System Safety Engineering

  • Develop and implement System Safety Programs for naval and marine projects throughout design, construction, testing, commissioning, and in-service support phases.
  • Perform system safety assessments to identify, evaluate, and mitigate hazards associated with vessel systems and equipment.
  • Ensure safety requirements are incorporated into system architecture, design reviews, and engineering processes.

Hazard Identification & Risk Assessment

  • Conduct hazard analyses using recognised methodologies, including:
    -Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA)
    - Fault Tree Analysis (FTA)
    - Hazard and Operability Studies (HAZOP)
    - Preliminary Hazard Analysis (PHA)
    - System Hazard Analysis (SHA)
    - Operating and Support Hazard Analysis (O&SHA)
  • Maintain project hazard logs and track risk mitigation actions to closure.
  • Prepare safety cases and risk assessments supporting vessel certification and customer acceptance.

Design Safety & Verification

  • Review engineering designs, specifications, drawings, and technical submissions to ensure compliance with safety requirements.
  • Evaluate the safety impact of design changes, modifications, and system integrations.
  • Participate in safety audits, design reviews, factory acceptance tests (FAT), harbour acceptance tests (HAT), and sea trials.

Naval Systems Integration

  • Support safety assessments involving:
    - Propulsion systems
    - Electrical power generation and distribution systems
    - Navigation and communication systems
    - Automation and control systems
    - Combat support systems
    - Mission equipment and auxiliary systems
  • Ensure safety interfaces are properly managed across integrated vessel systems.

Compliance & Certification

  • Support compliance with applicable standards, naval requirements, and regulatory frameworks, including:
    - MIL-STD-882E System Safety
    - IEC Standards
    - IMO Regulations
    - Classification Society Rules
    - Occupational Health & Safety Requirements
    - Contractual and Customer Safety Requirements
  • Liaise with customers, naval authorities, classification societies, and regulatory bodies on safety-related matters.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Develop and maintain safety management plans, hazard registers, safety reports, and technical documentation.
  • Generate safety assessment reports and present findings to project teams and stakeholders.
  • Support configuration management and document control processes for safety-related records.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with naval architects, marine engineers, electrical engineers, software engineers, quality assurance personnel, project managers, and production teams.
  • Provide technical guidance on safety engineering requirements and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance engineering safety practices and project delivery.

Requirements

  • Degree in Engineering (Marine, Naval Architecture, Electrical, Mechanical, Systems, Aerospace, Safety Engineering, or related discipline).

Experience

  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in system safety engineering, reliability engineering, naval engineering, marine engineering, defence projects, or other complex engineering environments.
  • Experience conducting hazard analyses and safety assessments for mission-critical systems.
  • Experience supporting vessel design, construction, testing, commissioning, or defence projects will be advantageous.

Technical Knowledge

  • System Safety Engineering principles and methodologies.
  • Hazard analysis techniques, including FMEA, FTA, HAZOP, PHA, and SHA.
  • Reliability, Maintainability and Availability (RAM) principles.
  • Safety lifecycle management and risk management processes.
  • Marine and naval vessel systems integration.
  • Regulatory and classification requirements applicable to marine and defence projects.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification or training in System Safety Engineering, Functional Safety, Reliability Engineering, or Risk Management.
  • Experience working with defence agencies, naval authorities, shipbuilders, or classification societies.
  • Familiarity with MIL-STD-882E, IEC 61508, ISO 31000, or equivalent safety standards.
  • Experience supporting autonomous, hybrid-electric, or advanced marine systems will be advantageous.
