Senior Infrastructure Engineer – Mission-Critical Systems
Job Overview
We are looking for an experienced Senior Infrastructure Engineer to design, deliver, integrate, and operate complex mission-critical IT infrastructure and data centre environments.
The role will focus on server, storage, virtualization, networking, automation, and infrastructure integration within large-scale, software-centric systems. The successful candidate will work across multidisciplinary and multicultural teams, providing technical leadership and ensuring infrastructure solutions meet performance, security, reliability, and operational requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Infrastructure Architecture & Design
- Design and deliver complex server, storage, virtualization, data centre, and network infrastructure solutions.
- Develop infrastructure architectures covering physical and virtual servers, compute platforms, storage arrays, SAN/NAS environments, backup and recovery solutions.
- Define infrastructure configurations and ensure solutions meet technical, security, availability, and performance requirements.
- Support infrastructure lifecycle management, including deployment, upgrades, migration, maintenance, and technology refresh.
- Contribute to infrastructure cost modelling and Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) analysis.
- Ensure infrastructure designs align with applicable safety, security, and operational requirements.
Server, Storage & Virtualization
- Manage and support enterprise Linux/RHEL and Windows Server environments.
- Implement server hardening and infrastructure security best practices.
- Design, deploy, and manage virtualization platforms such as:
- VMware
- Microsoft Hyper-V
- Proxmox
- KVM
- Design and support enterprise storage environments, including SAN/NAS, storage arrays, and data centre storage infrastructure.
- Develop and maintain backup, disaster recovery, and recovery solutions.
- Support high-availability and resilient infrastructure environments.
Containers & Infrastructure Automation
- Design and manage containerized infrastructure using platforms such as:
- Kubernetes
- OpenShift
- Implement infrastructure automation using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) methodologies.
- Develop and maintain automation using tools such as:
- Ansible
- Terraform
- Shell/Python or other infrastructure scripting technologies
- Support CI/CD pipelines and automated infrastructure deployment.
- Identify opportunities to automate repetitive infrastructure operations and improve operational efficiency.
Networking & Infrastructure Integration
- Apply strong knowledge of fundamental networking concepts, including switching, routing, TCP/IP, VLANs, and network connectivity.
- Work closely with network engineering teams to integrate server, storage, and network infrastructure.
- Support hardware integration and testing activities.
- Perform validation and integration of infrastructure components within large-scale, complex software-based systems.
- Troubleshoot infrastructure, hardware, virtualization, storage, and connectivity issues during integration and operational phases.
Project & Delivery Responsibilities
- Support infrastructure delivery throughout the complete project lifecycle, from architecture and design through deployment, integration, testing, and operational handover.
- Work under both traditional and Agile/iterative development methodologies.
- Contribute to hardware integration, system testing, validation, and acceptance activities.
- Provide timely progress updates to management and project stakeholders.
- Identify technical risks and propose appropriate mitigation strategies.
- Ensure infrastructure deliverables are completed according to project schedules and quality requirements.
Technical Leadership
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to infrastructure engineers.
- Support the development of high-performing technical teams.
- Allocate and prioritize technical activities where required.
- Promote a culture of continuous improvement, accountability, and technical excellence.
- Engage with senior stakeholders and influence technical decisions where stakeholders have differing objectives.
- Make sound technical decisions independently and take ownership of infrastructure outcomes.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Information & Communication Technology (ICT), Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related discipline.
- Postgraduate qualification or studies in Systems Engineering would be an advantage.
Essential Skills & Experience
- 7+ years of experience in the design, delivery, integration, and operations of complex mission-critical IT infrastructure.
- Strong experience with:
- Enterprise servers and compute platforms
- Storage arrays
- SAN/NAS
- Backup and recovery
- Virtualization
- Data centre infrastructure
- Infrastructure automation
- Strong knowledge of Linux/RHEL and Windows Server operating systems.
- Experience with server hardening and infrastructure security.
- Hands-on experience with virtualization technologies such as VMware, Hyper-V, Proxmox, or KVM.
- Experience with container platforms such as Kubernetes and OpenShift.
- Strong understanding of infrastructure architecture and design.
- Experience with physical and virtual server deployment and lifecycle management.
- Strong understanding of networking fundamentals, particularly switching and routing.
- Hands-on experience with Ansible, Terraform, IaC, CI/CD, and infrastructure automation.
- Strong scripting and automation capabilities.
- Experience with hardware integration, testing, validation, and system integration.
- Experience delivering complex software-based or mission-critical systems.
- Experience working in both Agile and traditional project environments.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary and multicultural teams.
- Understanding of Safety, Security, and Human Factors within data centre and infrastructure environments.
- Experience with infrastructure cost modelling and TCO analysis.
- Strong leadership, stakeholder management, and communication skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Strong judgement, accountability, problem-solving, and independent decision-making abilities.
Desirable Skills
- Cisco certifications, such as CCNA or CCNP.
- Knowledge or experience with Air Traffic Management (ATM) systems.
- Experience working within aviation, defence, transportation, or other safety-critical / mission-critical environments.
- French language proficiency.
- Experience with large-scale distributed infrastructure environments.
