About the Role
We are seeking a commercially minded Marine Underwriter to manage and grow a portfolio across Cargo and/or Hull & Liability lines. This role offers the opportunity to take ownership of broker relationships, underwrite complex risks, and contribute directly to portfolio performance.
You will be part of a lean and collaborative team, with greater visibility and autonomy to make underwriting decisions and shape business outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
Underwriting & Risk Management
- Underwrite new and renewal Marine risks (Cargo and/or Hull & Liability) within delegated authority
- Assess complex risk exposures and determine appropriate pricing, terms, and coverage structures
- Handle referrals and non-standard risks, providing sound underwriting judgement and solutions
- Ensure underwriting decisions are aligned with risk appetite, governance standards, and market practices
Portfolio Ownership
- Manage and grow an assigned portfolio, with accountability for profitability, retention, and growth
- Monitor portfolio performance (loss ratios, rate adequacy, mix of business) and take proactive actions
- Identify opportunities to optimise portfolio composition and drive sustainable growth
- Broker Engagement & Business Development
- Build and deepen relationships with key brokers and intermediaries
- Actively manage pipeline, identify new opportunities, and support business development initiatives
- Provide technical underwriting expertise and responsive service to strengthen broker partnerships
- Stakeholder Collaboration
- Partner with Claims, Reinsurance, and Actuarial teams on complex or large risks
- Contribute to underwriting initiatives, product enhancements, and process improvements
Requirements
- 5–8 years of Marine underwriting experience (Cargo and/or Hull & Liability)
- Strong technical underwriting skills with exposure to complex or large risks
- Experience managing broker relationships and supporting business growth
- Good understanding of Marine insurance wordings, pricing, and market dynamics
- Commercially driven with sound risk judgement and decision-making ability
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
- ACII / ANZIIF or equivalent qualifications will be advantageous
