Role Overview – Thin Film Coating Engineer

The Thin Film Coating Engineer is responsible for the development, optimization, and industrialization of optical thin film coatings within a manufacturing environment. This role supports both new product introduction and ongoing production, ensuring robust, repeatable coating processes that meet performance, quality, and cost targets.

The position combines hands-on process engineering, thin film design, and cross-functional collaboration to deliver high-performance optical products and drive continuous improvement in coating technologies.

What You'll Need

  • Bachelor's, Master's, or Diploma in Physics, Materials Science, Optics, or a related Engineering discipline
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in thin film coating, ideally within a manufacturing environment
  • Experience in optical thin film coatings preferred
  • Strong understanding of thin film design and modeling tools
  • Hands-on experience with:
  • Vacuum evaporation systems
  • Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) processes
  • Proficiency in thin film design software such as:
  • FILMSTAR, OptiLayer, TFCalc, or equivalent
  • Familiarity with:
  • Statistical Process Control (SPC)
  • Six Sigma / Lean manufacturing principles
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and documentation skills
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, production-driven environment
  • Strong collaboration and interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional improvement initiatives

What You'll Do

  • Develop and optimize optical thin film coating designs to meet product performance specifications
  • Support new product introduction (NPI) by transferring coating processes from R&D to manufacturing
  • Operate, troubleshoot, and improve PVD and vacuum coating systems
  • Design and implement experiments to improve coating performance, yield, and reliability
  • Analyze process data using SPC tools and drive continuous improvement initiatives
  • Collaborate with R&D, production, quality, and engineering teams to resolve technical issues
  • Lead root cause analysis and implement corrective/preventive actions for process deviations
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, process instructions, and work standards
  • Support scaling of coating processes for high-volume manufacturing
  • Train technicians and operators on coating processes and best practices
  • Partner with cross-functional teams to improve yield, cost efficiency, and process capability
  • Contribute to the adoption of Lean / Six Sigma methodologies in process improvement
  • Support equipment qualification, maintenance strategies, and process validation activities

What We're Looking For

  • A hands-on thin film coating engineer with strong manufacturing and process experience
  • Proven ability to translate optical coating designs into scalable production processes
  • Strong technical problem-solver with a structured, data-driven mindset
  • Comfortable working across R&D and production environments
  • A proactive, collaborative team player who thrives in a fast-paced, innovation-driven setting
