We are seeking a dynamic, resilient and highly dedicated Senior / Staff Nurse for our Operating Theatre team. As such, we empower our nurses at every level to shape and govern their own clinical practices. As a Senior / Staff Nurse in the Operating Theatre, you are a key member of the surgical team and your precision, vigilance, and expertise will directly impact patient outcomes.
Duties and Responsibilities
Primary Responsibilities and Duties (80%)
- Pre-Operative Preparation:
- Prepare the operating room prior to surgery by procuring appropriate surgical equipment, specialized instruments, medical supplies, consumables, and infusions required for procedures.
- Check all surgical equipment prior to procedures to confirm proper functionality and safety.
- Continuously check drains, infusions, and medications in progress.
- Intra-Operative Care & Surgical Assisting:
- Coordinate patient care needs seamlessly with scrub nurses, circulating nurses, anaesthetists, and surgical teams.
- Work alongside surgeons as a Scrub Nurse, anticipating surgical needs, accurately passing instruments, sponges, needles, and other sterile materials as required.
- Perform meticulous, strict surgical counts (sponges, instruments, needles) before, during, and after procedures in accordance with safe surgery protocols.
- Handle, operate, and maintain specialized surgical and diagnostic equipment competently during operations.
- Observe and enforce strict standards of aseptic technique and infection control within the surgical environment.
- Post-Operative Care & Patient Safety:
- Perform continuous patient assessment, monitoring, and thorough clinical documentation during the perioperative phase.
- Monitor patients in the Post-Anaesthesia Care Unit (PACU) / Recovery Room, providing appropriate care and monitoring until recovery from the effects of anaesthesia.
- Safely transfer patients post-surgery after an appropriate period of recovery and observation.
- Respond effectively and calmly to emergency clinical situations with the ability to mobilize available assistance when necessary.
- Operational & Team Excellence:
- Collaborates and co-operates with surgeons, anaesthetists, and other healthcare providers in the smooth delivery of surgical services.
- Demonstrates proper, economical usage and stewardship of expensive surgical consumables, implants, and equipment.
- Supervises and guides junior staff nurses, enrolled nurses, healthcare assistants, and nursing students posted to the Operating Theatre.
- Assumes the role of Staff Nurse in-charge or Shift Lead when designated.
- Demonstrates competency in core nursing and OT-specific skill sets implemented by Nursing Administration.
Secondary Responsibilities and Duties (20%)
- Participates in clinical, service, and surgical quality improvement activities, audits, and research studies.
- Demonstrates ongoing awareness of current perioperative nursing and healthcare evidence-based practices.
- Assumes additional responsibilities as assigned by Nursing Officers, Senior Nursing Officers, Assistant/Deputy Director (Nursing), and Chief Nurse.
Registration: Registered Nurse with the Singapore Nursing Board (SNB).
Education: Diploma in Nursing or Bachelor of Science in Nursing from a recognized training institution approved by the SNB.
Specialized Qualifications: Relevant Advanced Diploma in Perioperative Nursing (or equivalent) is preferred for candidates applying for the
Senior Staff Nurse position.
Shift Work: Able to perform rotating shifts (including night shifts, weekends, and on-call duties as scheduled).
Skills & Attributes: Strong critical thinking, high attention to detail, adaptability in high-pressure surgical environments, and excellent interpersonal skills.
