Job Description

Who are we
We are Cambridge CARES, the University of Cambridge's research centre in Singapore, established under the National Research Foundation (NRF) CREATE programme (CAM.CREATE). Within Cambridge CARES, BloodCounts! is a collaborative research initiative that brings together the University of Cambridge, A.STAR, NTU, NUS, SingHealth, and numerous partners across the UK, Belgium, The Gambia, India, and the Netherlands.

BloodCounts! focuses on elevating the clinical value of the full blood count (FBC), the most commonly performed clinical test worldwide, through the development of novel AI methodologies. We have access to population-scale raw flow cytometry data, which underpins the summary FBC reports used daily by millions of clinicians. We have demonstrated that applying AI techniques to this data can uncover additional clinically relevant insights, including markers for cancers, iron deficiency, and pregnancy outcomes.

This NRF AI for Science project aims to develop multi-modal foundation models of blood by integrating flow cytometry data with cell-level imaging data. These models will be developed using anonymised data from SingHealth and NUHS patients. The goal is to build a population-scale foundation model of blood that performs equitably across all genetic ancestries represented in Singapore.

The models will be applied to clinical studies in stroke and lung cancer, with the objective of identifying novel biomarkers that can inform and improve clinical treatment strategies.

This project will integrate with the wider BloodCounts! consortium, enabling co-development of models and rapid hypothesis testing across European, African, South Asian, and East Asian populations. Researchers worldwide will be able to access our models and insights via a secure platform, APIs, and open-source code and models that can be fine-tuned for further research.

The BloodCounts! AI for Science team is led by Professors Michael Roberts and Carola-Bibiane Schnlieb (Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP), University of Cambridge) and Professor Weisi Lin (College of Computing & Data Science, Nanyang Technological University). They are supported by Dr Nicholas Gleadall (University of Cambridge), Professor Tan Bee Huat Iain (SingHealth), Professor Hui Ji (NUS), Professor Mickey Koh (St. George's Hospital, London), Dr Hwee Kuan Lee (A.STAR), Professor Parashkev Nachev (University College London), Professor Willem Ouwehand (University of Cambridge), Dr Suthesh Sivapalaratnam (Barts Health), and Dr Chuen Wan Tan (SingHealth), alongside a broad network of collaborators.
