Job Description

Position Overview

As a Senior R&D Chemist at Aprisium, you will play a key role in developing, validating, and translating analytical chemistry methods into robust, real-world contamination monitoring solutions. This role is intended for an experienced chemist who can work independently, lead technical workstreams, make evidence-based decisions, and take ownership of project outcomes.

The ideal candidate will bring strong experience in analytical chemistry, with electrochemistry being highly preferred, and will be comfortable working hands-on in the laboratory while also guiding experimental strategy, troubleshooting complex problems, and collaborating across chemistry, hardware, fluidics, electronics, and data teams.

This is a hands-on R&D role in a fast-paced startup environment, suited for someone proactive, technically strong, adaptable, and ready to take responsibility for both execution and decision-making.

Key Responsibilities

Method Development & Validation

Lead the design, development, optimisation, and validation of analytical chemistry, electrochemical, and wet-chemistry methods for real-time, at-source contamination monitoring across water and engineered fluid applications.

Project Ownership & Technical Decision-Making

Take ownership of assigned R&D projects or technical workstreams, including experimental planning, prioritisation, risk assessment, troubleshooting, data interpretation, and recommendation of next steps. Make sound technical decisions based on evidence, project needs, and practical constraints.

Analyser & Method Integration

Work closely with hardware, fluidics, electronics, software, and data teams to translate laboratory methods into robust analyser workflows. Support the integration of chemical methods into autonomous, field-deployable systems with attention to repeatability, reliability, and operational practicality.

Testing, QC & Documentation

Define, plan, and execute laboratory and field testing protocols, calibration routines, validation studies, and quality-control procedures. Maintain clear, structured, and auditable documentation of experimental work, conclusions, and technical decisions.

Troubleshooting & Continuous Improvement

Investigate anomalies, interferences, performance drift, reproducibility issues, and unexpected experimental outcomes. Lead root-cause analysis and drive improvements in methods, materials, workflows, and processes.

Cross-Functional Collaboration & Technical Guidance

Collaborate with the wider R&D and engineering teams to align chemistry development with product, field, and customer requirements. Provide technical guidance to junior team members or supporting staff where needed.

Regulatory, Pilot & Customer Support

Support certifications, pilots, and customer deployments by providing technical inputs, test data interpretation, experimental evidence, and chemistry-related insights to internal teams and external stakeholders.

Qualifications and Skills
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Physics, or a related field; a Master's degree is preferred.
  • Minimum 6 years of relevant experience in R&D, analytical chemistry, electrochemistry, method development, environmental analysis, industrial chemistry, instrumentation, or a related technical field.
  • Strong background in Analytical Chemistry is required, including experience with chemical analysis, method development, calibration, validation, troubleshooting, and interpretation of experimental results.
  • Experience in Electrochemistry is highly preferred.
  • Broad chemistry experience is desirable, especially across wet chemistry, analytical methods, laboratory testing, materials, reagents, instrumentation, or applied R&D.
  • Strong hands-on laboratory skills and willingness to work directly with experiments, instruments, samples, reagents, and prototypes.
  • Ability to independently plan experiments, analyse results, identify issues, and make evidence-based technical decisions.
  • Strong critical thinking, problem-solving ability, attention to detail, and scientific judgment.
  • Experience taking ownership of projects, technical workstreams, or complex experimental tasks from planning through execution and reporting.
  • Proactive, responsible, and comfortable working in a fast-paced startup environment with changing priorities and practical constraints.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with chemists, engineers, software/data teams, and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to present technical ideas, experimental results, risks, and recommendations clearly.
  • Experience with data analysis tools or scientific software such as Excel, Python, MATLAB, Origin, or similar platforms would be an advantage.
  • Exposure to optical, photonic, or other instrument-based analytical methods would be a plus but is not required.
