- Key Direct Materials Purchase - resins, components, packaging materials, etc . An experienced buyer understands resin grades, (or at least has supplies source experience in one of these key Material category) market fluctuations, and supplier reliability, ensuring supplies on time for the operation. He/she should be able to anticipate supply chain risks, understand how to review stock on hand and monitor supplier delivery, and ensures materials arrive on time.
- Supplier Negotiation & Cost Control Responsibility, For example - Resin prices can swing dramatically with global oil markets. An experience buyer will read market trend, knows how to negotiate, work on cost down, negotiate extension of vendor payment terms. (an admin person will wait for his/her manager to tell her what to do)
- Indirect Procurement beyond Direct Materials, injection molding operation requires operation supplies, maintenance supplies, other repetitive indirect purchase. An experienced buyer can evaluate suppliers, manage lead times, ensure compatibility with production requirements and is confidently to execute competitive quotes review.
- Compliance & Documentation Requirement Experienced buyers are familiar with ISO standards, regulatory requirements, and audit processes. They ensure supplier certifications are valid and documentation is complete, reducing compliance risks. He/She can handle audit (as I don't agree audit should only be handle by Manager). Our Buyers, Engineers who are functioning like our documented ISO procedure/WI, should be able to handle audit unless he/she does not practice per what is documented per our procedure.
(e.g never maintain AVL, never do yearly supplier performance evaluation, or allow PO release after supplier delivery, etc.)
- Cross-Functional Collaboration , Experience Buyer can also confidently lead and attend meeting with project, operations, engineering, and finance when needed. Leading a meeting to resolve some issues with cross functioning team is not the sole duty of a dept HOD. As a Senior staff in a company having the right experience should be confident to attend meeting related to supplies and situational cases to discuss options and solutions with cross functioning team.
- Experienced Buyers can confidently execute procurement strategy tactically, handle negotiations, manage day-to-day supplier interactions, and ensure materials are supplied on time.
