What You'll Be Doing

As a Scientist in Signal Processing & Sensing, you will lead the core perception and detection algorithm strategy. You will design, model, and validate digital signal processing pipelines that transform raw analog/digital data from FMCW receivers into accurate 3D point clouds, extracting fine velocity and range metrics under challenging signal-to-noise conditions.

Key Responsibilities

  • DSP Algorithm Development: Design, prototype, and refine advanced signal processing algorithms for FMCW LiDAR, including 2D-FFT, range-Doppler decoupling, peak extraction, phase unwrapping, and dynamic noise thresholding.
  • Impairment Compensation & Calibration: Develop digital algorithms to mitigate hardware non-idealities, such as laser chirp non-linearity, phase noise, I/Q imbalance, and thermal drift.
  • Detection & Point Cloud Extraction: Optimize detection algorithms (e.g., CFAR variants) for low-SNR environments, maximize point cloud density, and suppress ambient clutter and optical crosstalk.
  • Hardware-Software Co-Design: Collaborate with Electronics and Embedded SW teams to define fixed-point implementation requirements, memory footprints, and compute workloads for FPGA/DSP hardware targets.
  • Validation & Field Data Analysis: Analyze raw digitized waveforms from laboratory setups and field test platforms to validate algorithm accuracy and robustness against real-world environmental edge cases.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Signal Processing, Communications, Physics, or a related field.
  • Experience: 3+ years of relevant experience in DSP algorithm development for FMCW LiDAR, Radar, or Coherent Optical Communications.
  • Technical Expertise:
  • Strong mathematical proficiency in estimation theory, spectral analysis, digital filtering, and detection algorithms.
  • Deep understanding of FMCW signal structures, beat frequency physics, and phase noise impacts.
  • Expert-level skill in MATLAB and Python (NumPy/SciPy) for algorithm prototyping and dynamic system modeling.
  • Familiarity with FPGA implementation constraints (fixed-point arithmetic, latency, pipelining) is a strong plus.
  • Soft Skills: Data-driven, systematic approach to troubleshooting complex noise sources and high attention to detail.
