We are hiring a Senior Merchant Risk & Onboarding Specialist to take ownership of Finmo's Merchant onboarding and KYB lifecycle. This is not a passive, process-driven role. This is for someone who wants to:

  • Step up into ownership of onboarding decisions; not just execute checklists
  • Operate at the intersection of Compliance, Risk, and Operations;
  • Brings investigative judgment, not just document processing discipline
  • Help shape the next generation of onboarding (AI-assisted, high-speed KYB);

You will be responsible for end-to-end onboarding execution, risk assessment, and continuous improvement of onboarding workflows — ensuring that Finmo can onboard merchants quickly, safely, and in line with global regulatory expectations.

This role requires someone proactive, forward-looking, and comfortable operating in a fast-paced, technology-driven environment, possess strong working knowledge of AML/CFT, KYB, merchant risk, onboarding controls, and regulatory expectations applicable to payments businesses.

Most importantly, you will bring passion for building robust onboarding controls, scalable KYB processes, and strong operational discipline with a focus on fostering a strong culture of compliance and operational excellence across the organization.

Key Responsibilities:

1. End to end Merchant Onboarding

  • Own and drive KYB onboarding from submission through assessment to decision
  • Break down business models quickly and identify real risk (not just checklist compliance)
  • Map ownership structures, identify Ultimate Beneficial Owners (UBOs), and validate legitimacy of businesses
  • Make clear, defensible onboarding decisions — not just escalate everything upstream
  • You will be accountable for outcomes, not just process

2. Risk-based Decisioning

  • Take ownership of merchant risk approvals (within delegated authority)
  • Support and contribute to high-risk Enhanced Due Diligence (EDD) reviews
  • Apply judgment — balancing commercial urgency vs regulatory risk
  • Ensure every decision is documented, justified, and audit-ready

3. Speed + Quality = Non-negotiable

  • Operate with a strong bias for speed, without compromising control
  • Reduce onboarding turnaround times through better judgment and prioritisation
  • Avoid unnecessary friction — but never at the expense of regulatory risk

4. Build, Not Just Execute

  • Identify bottlenecks and inefficiencies in current onboarding flows
  • Actively improve how we onboard:
  • Smarter data collection
  • Better use of tools
  • Cleaner workflows
  • Partner with Compliance and Product teams to implement:
  • AI-assisted onboarding tools
  • Automation in KYB, screening, and risk scoring

5. Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with Compliance, Operations, and Product teams to ensure consistent onboarding standards, serving as the operational bridge between:
  • Compliance (policy and escalation alignment)
  • Gateway Operations (execution)
  • Product / Engineering (system improvements)
  • Translate regulatory expectations into practical onboarding execution
  • Act as a subject matter expert in onboarding and KYB processes
  • Provide guidance and support to junior team members where required

6. Stay Audit-Ready at all times

  • Ensure all onboarding decisions are traceable, justified and consistent
  • Be comfortable with scrutiny from regulators, banking partners and Internal audit
  • Contribute to a strong culture of compliance, integrity, and operational excellence.

Experience

  • 6+ years of experience in onboarding, KYB, financial crime compliance, or risk operations within financial services, fintech, or payments
  • Strong hands-on experience in Merchant onboarding, risk assessment and classification, RFIs and EDD case handling
  • Strong working knowledge of AML/CFT frameworks and onboarding best practices
  • Familiar with onboarding / KYB tools (e.g. Trulioo, Onfido, WorldCheck or similar)
  • Exposure to payments, fintech, MSB, card acquiring or VASP environments is a strong plus
  • Experience working in fast-paced, high-growth environments is preferred
  • Hands-on experience working with cross-functional teams (Legal, Product, Engineering, Risk, and Operations) as a valuable team player

Technical Knowledge

  • Strong background in cross-border payments, digital wallets, remittance, or money services businesses (MSB).
  • Industry certifications such as ACAMS, ICA, or OCEG Compliance & Risk Management qualifications.
  • Experience implementing compliance and regulatory technology (RegTech) solutions, process automation, or AI-driven risk management systems.
  • Project management expertise (PMP, Lean Six Sigma, or equivalent) is a plus
