Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer / Design Lead to drive end-to-end mechanical design and development of analytical instruments and precision electromechanical products, similar to platforms developed by Waters Corporation. The role involves concept development, detailed mechanical engineering, prototyping, supplier coordination, and production support for laboratory and industrial instrumentation.
Key Responsibilities
Design & Development
- Lead mechanical design activities from concept, architecture, and industrial design to detailed design and production release
- Create 3D models, 2D drawings, assemblies, and BOMs using SOLIDWORKS or equivalent CAD tools
- Design precision mechanical components and enclosures for analytical instruments, including fluidic housings, chassis, panels, brackets, and structural assemblies
- Design components for injection molding, sheet metal, die casting, machining, and rapid prototyping
- Perform reverse engineering based on customer drawings, samples, or legacy products
- Optimize designs for form, fit, function, vibration control, thermal stability, reliability, cost, and manufacturability
Analytical & Laboratory Instrumentation Focus
- Design mechanical subsystems for chromatography systems, mass spectrometry platforms, spectroscopy instruments, and laboratory automation equipment
- Support integration of optics, sensors, pumps, valves, tubing, fluidic paths, connectors, and PCBs
- Ensure designs meet precision alignment, sealing, thermal, acoustic, and contamination-control requirements
- Apply design practices suitable for 24/7 lab operation and high-reliability environments
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with electronics, firmware, systems, thermal, quality, and manufacturing teams
- Support system-level packaging and layout to enable serviceability and modularity
- Participate in technical reviews and architecture discussions
Vendor & Project Management
- Coordinate with suppliers and contract manufacturers for prototyping and production
- Lead DFM/DFA reviews with suppliers and internal stakeholders
- Support vendor selection, cost optimization, and manufacturability improvements
- Ensure timely delivery of prototypes and production-ready designs
Documentation & Reviews
- Prepare fabrication drawings, assembly procedures, and engineering documentation
- Conduct design reviews to identify risks early and drive corrective actions
- Apply GD&T and tolerance stack-up analysis for precision assemblies
Technical Skills
- CAD Tools: SOLIDWORKS (mandatory) exposure to HyperMesh or similar tools is a plus
- Manufacturing Processes: Injection molding, sheet metal, precision machining, die casting
- Design Practices: DFM, DFA, GD&T, tolerance analysis
