About the role
The Lithium Market Analysis and Strategy team generates short-to-medium-term market insights (up to 5 years). Key aspects of this role include demand forecasts and changes (including downstream sectors), supply trends, comprehensive competitor analysis, and price forecasting. The team's focus is to leverage this analysis and translate it into succinct, actionable conclusions for the Lithium sales team and Rio Tinto senior management. This role will also lead the formation and shaping of the Lithium Go-to-Market strategy, aligned with the Commercial Strategy, Group Strategy and ESG objectives.

We are looking for a Senior Manager, Market Analysis & Strategy - Lithium to join a high performing team, support business growth and profit generation through market insight, and to inform Lithium Commercial Strategy. Coordinate the endtoend rhythm of the TWC Working Group, ensuring clear preparation, alignment, followthrough on actions and governance.

Reporting to the VP of Sales & Marketing, Lithium, you will:

  • Deepen and broaden our understanding of global and regional macroeconomic and lithium sector trends.
  • Lead teams of professionals and partner with stakeholders in Commercial, Product Groups, and Group functions to formalize and align our go-to-market approach.
  • Lead, manage and support the development of a small team of professionals who share in the same mission.
  • Work closely with Lithium Sales Team on pricing structures and recommendations for customer proposals including long- and short-term agreements.
  • Collaborate with the Product Group on the Strategy Development and Execution processes for Lithium by working with the entire value chain to develop coherent and cohesive Go-To-Market Strategies by analyzing commercial, industry, technical and financial data to support value creating business opportunities, decisions and strategic directions.
  • Develop and maintain regular research using our vast array of external research and internal datasets to closely monitor demand, supply, and competitor activity.
  • Generate, identify, evaluate and build business cases for new commercial opportunities, markets and customers.
  • Generate cohesive thinking and a constant feedback loop for the commercial strategy via sales, market development, technical marketing and other stakeholders all insights should continuously develop the commercial strategy.
  • Monitor market development and industrial and trade policy and keep the broader Market Analysis and Product Group Strategy teams and extended stakeholder group informed of changes/news/intelligence, as appropriate.
  • Support multiple stakeholders to deliver market updates for senior management and external presentations. Support senior and executive management on business reporting activities and synthesis of information for communication.
  • Collaborate with other Market Analysis teams to draw cross-commodity insights and share best practices additionally, collaborate with Economics teams to bridge with long-run analysis.
  • Manage subscription budget, procurement, and vendor relationships, providing an improved centralized view on subscriptions across Commercial.
  • Be armed with resources and provide strong leadership and develop capability in the team to achieve the above goals.
  • Create, join, or enhance industry-wide thought leadership.

About you
To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:

  • University degree in either economics, technical, business or commercial discipline.
  • Minimum 10 years of relevant experience in the lithium or other metals and mining industry.
  • Strong strategic and commercial acumen with 8-10 years of prior experience in commercial strategy, consulting and/or investment analysis.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the lithium market, its supply chain and end-use applications, battery chemistries, and leading consumers and suppliers of lithium.
  • Proven relevant experience and analytical skills with the ability to critically analyze data and identify trends and key drivers.
  • Proven ability to present concepts and results clearly.
  • Ability to effectively navigate ambiguity and change context to develop workable and sustainable solutions.
  • Influencing skills with the ability to translate strategic and technical content into actionable insights.
  • Possesses innate curiosity, observes empathetically and enjoys creatively driven problem solving.. Ability in navigating and operating successfully in a matrix organization, with stakeholders engagement and business partnering skills being key requisites.
  • Competencies in collaboration, listening, ability to receive and provide feedback in a positive manner and embodiment of RT behaviors of care, courage and curiosity will be required.
  • Ability to travel.
  • Excellent and proven project management skills.
  • Proven ability to lead a team and develop capabilities to achieve results.
  • Experience working in an international setting will be an advantage.
  • Excellent IT skills, including the use of MS Office and Power BI.
  • Advanced written and spoken English.
