Job Description

Job Summary:

The Senior Executive – Property & Casualty Underwriting is responsible for evaluating, underwriting and managing new and renewal commercial business within delegated authority limits, the Company's underwriting guidelines and applicable local regulations. This role supports profitable growth by delivering sound technical underwriting decisions, developing strong intermediary relationships and providing effective technical support to Distribution colleagues.

The portfolio covers Property and Casualty classes of business, including but not limited to Property, Public Liability, Work Injury Compensation and other General Accident products.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate, assess and quote new and renewal business within delegated authority limits, the Company's underwriting guidelines, risk appetite and applicable local regulations.
  • Make technically sound underwriting decisions that support profitable growth and maintain the quality and sustainability of the portfolio.
  • Review policy terms, conditions, clauses, warranties, endorsements, deductibles, limits and pricing to ensure that coverage is appropriate and commercially competitive.
  • Conduct risk assessments and arrange or participate in risk surveys where necessary, including reviewing risk information, loss experience, risk controls and other relevant technical documentation.
  • Identify and address key exposures, coverage gaps, accumulation concerns and adverse risk characteristics, escalating matters outside delegated authority in accordance with established referral procedures.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with intermediaries, supporting business development and the retention and growth of profitable accounts.
  • Work closely with Distribution colleagues to identify sales opportunities, market trends, customer needs, emerging risks and areas of underwriting appetite.
  • Provide timely and practical technical underwriting support, guidance and product information to Distribution colleagues and intermediaries.
  • Negotiate terms and conditions with intermediaries and other stakeholders while balancing customer needs, competitiveness and underwriting discipline.
  • Monitor portfolio performance, business mix, claims trends and market developments, and recommend appropriate underwriting actions where required.
  • Ensure accurate and timely completion of underwriting documentation, referrals, quotations, policy instructions and system records.
  • Comply with Company policies, underwriting authorities, governance standards, risk management requirements, sanctions and anti-money laundering controls, and all applicable laws and regulations.
  • Assist the Underwriting Manager in reviewing and improving underwriting processes, controls, guidelines and operating procedures.
  • Support the Underwriting Manager in the transformation to digital insurance, including enhancements to application platforms, straight-through quotation and rating processes, workflow automation and data quality.
  • Contribute to product, pricing and portfolio initiatives, including user testing, process mapping, training materials and implementation activities where required.
  • Share technical knowledge and contribute to the development of underwriting capability within the team.
  • Perform other duties and projects assigned by the Underwriting Manager.

Job Requirements:

  • Minimum Diploma or recognized professional insurance qualification.
  • At least 2 years of relevant working experience in Commercial Lines underwriting, with experience in Property and/or Casualty business preferred.
  • Actively pursuing professional insurance designations such as ACII, AAII or an equivalent qualification is preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of commercial lines products, underwriting principles, policy wordings and contract language, including applicable regulatory and policy differences.
  • Working knowledge of Property and Casualty risk assessment, coverage analysis, pricing considerations and risk mitigation practices.
  • Strong negotiation, analytical and decision-making skills, with the ability to exercise sound judgement within delegated authority.
  • Strong computer skills and the ability to work effectively with multi-faceted underwriting, quotation, policy administration and digital systems.
  • Ability to manage workload effectively and independently, prioritize competing deadlines and maintain accuracy in a fast-paced environment.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate technical matters clearly to both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to build and maintain productive relationships with intermediaries, Distribution colleagues and other business partners.
  • Demonstrates teamwork, professionalism, accountability and a commitment to continuous improvement.
