Job Description

The Behaviour Researcher will specialise in studying and documenting the behavioural patterns of animals at the Singapore Oceanarium to support animal welfare initiatives and conservation research. This role combines scientific observation with practical application to enhance our understanding of aquatic animal behaviour in managed care environments while contributing to broader conservation science efforts.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct animal behavioural research studies.
  • Conduct systematic behavioural observations and data collection using established ethological methods and modern technology.
  • Develop and maintain behavioural databases, ensuring accurate documentation of individual animal profiles and population-level behavioural trends.
  • Analyse behavioural data using appropriate statistical methods and prepare findings for internal reports and external scientific publications.
  • Collaborate with animal care teams to translate research findings into practical applications for husbandry, training, and enrichment programmes.
  • Support the development of behavioural management protocols that enhance animal welfare and facilitate veterinary care procedures.
  • Participate in professional conferences and workshops to share research findings and stay current with behavioural research methodologies.
  • Any other behavioural research initiatives as directed by the Conservation & Science department.

Requirements:

  • Degree in Animal Behaviour, Marine Biology, Life Sciences, Zoology or relevant behavioural science discipline.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in behavioural research, preferably with marine or aquatic species.
  • Experience with marine animals and aquatic environments preferred.
  • Background in ethological research methods and statistical analysis of behavioural data.
  • Proficiency with behavioural analysis software and video recording equipment.
  • Understanding of animal welfare science and its application in zoological settings.
  • Excellent observational skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Confident to work in an aquatic environment.
  • Able to perform shift work, including on weekends and public holidays.
