Senior Backup Engineer SME

We are looking for an experienced Backup Engineer to manage, support, and optimize our enterprise backup infrastructure spanning on-premise systems and cloud environments (AWS & Azure). This role requires advanced knowledge of Veeam Backup & Replication, cloud-native backup services, and enterprise storage platforms. The ideal candidate will ensure data integrity, disaster recovery readiness, and regulatory compliance through robust backup strategies and automation.

Key Responsibilities:

Backup Management:

• Design, configure, and manage backup solutions using Veeam, AWS Backup, and Azure Backup.
• Monitor and troubleshoot backup jobs, replication, and archival processes across hybrid environments.
• Implement backup strategies for physical, virtual, and cloud workloads (EC2, Azure VMs, databases, file shares, etc.).

Storage Infrastructure Support:

• Administer storage platforms (SAN/NAS/Object) and ensure optimized performance for backup operations.
• Manage storage tiering, snapshotting, and data lifecycle policies for backup storage.
• Perform capacity planning and integrate storage with backup platforms.

Disaster Recovery & Restoration:

• Execute and regularly test disaster recovery plans and restore operations.
• Document recovery workflows and validate RTO/RPO objectives with business units.
• Support fast, secure restores across hybrid infrastructure.

Automation & Reporting:

• Develop scripts and tools (e.g., PowerShell, Bash, Python) for automated backup and reporting.
• Create dashboards and reports for compliance, audit, and operational visibility.
• Ensure monitoring and alerting is in place for backup and storage health.

Security & Compliance:

• Ensure backup data is encrypted, secured, and meets internal and external compliance standards.
• Work with security teams to implement air-gapped, immutable, or ransomware-resilient backup strategies.
• Assist in audits and ensure adherence to regulations (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA, ISO).

Academic Qualifications and Certifications:

• Experience with Kubernetes backup tools (e.g., Kasten K10).
• Familiarity with SaaS backup (e.g., M365, Salesforce).
• Knowledge of ITIL practices and service management tools (e.g., ServiceNow).
• Hands-on experience with backup/data governance policies in regulated industries.

Certifications Required/Preferred

• Veeam Certified Engineer (VMCE) – Required
• AWS Certified SysOps Administrator or AWS Backup Specialty – Preferred
• Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate – Preferred
• Relevant storage certifications (e.g., Dell EMC, NetApp, HPE) – Preferred
• ITIL Foundation – Optional but beneficial

Required Skills and Experience:

• Minimum 5 years of experience in backup engineering with strong exposure to enterprise environments.
• Expert in Veeam Backup & Replication, including features like SureBackup, Cloud Connect, and Instant Recovery.
• Experience with AWS Backup, Azure Backup, and cloud-native workloads (e.g., EC2, Azure VMs, RDS, Azure Files).
• Strong understanding of enterprise storage systems and integration with backup platforms.
• Skilled in scripting and automation (PowerShell, Bash, or Python).
• Experience with virtualization technologies (VMware, Hyper-V) in backup contexts.
