The Senior Accountant is responsible for overseeing general accounting operations, maintaining the integrity of financial data, and preparing accurate financial reports. This role involves reconciling account balances, managing the month-end and year-end close processes, and ensuring compliance with GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) or IFRS.
Month-End/Year-End Close: Lead the closing process by preparing journal entries and ensuring all financial transactions are recorded accurately.
Financial Statements: Prepare balance sheets, profit and loss statements, and other financial reports to summarize the company's current and projected financial position.
Variance Analysis: Analyze financial statements for discrepancies and explain variances between actuals and budgets.
Tax & Audit: Coordinate with external auditors during annual audits and assist in the preparation of tax returns and regulatory filings.
Internal Controls: Maintain and strengthen internal controls to prevent errors and fraud.
Fixed Assets: Manage and reconcile the fixed asset ledger, including depreciation schedules.
Reconciliations: Oversee bank, accounts receivable, and accounts payable reconciliations to ensure the general ledger is accurate.
Mentorship: Provide guidance and review the work of junior accounting staff or clerks.
Process Improvement: Identify and implement efficiencies in accounting software and departmental workflows.
Advanced Accounting Knowledge: Deep understanding of GAAP/IFRS and financial reporting requirements.
Software Proficiency: Expert-level skills in Microsoft Excel (VLOOKUPs, Pivot Tables) and experience with ERP systems like SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, or Microsoft Dynamics.
Data Accuracy: An exceptional eye for detail and a high level of accuracy in data entry and analysis.
Analytical Thinking: The ability to interpret complex financial data and provide actionable recommendations.
Communication: Clearly presenting financial findings to non-financial stakeholders.
Time Management: Meeting strict deadlines for monthly reporting and tax filings.
Degree: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
Certification: CPA (Certified Public Accountant) or ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) designation is often preferred or required.
Experience: Typically 3-5+ years of progressive accounting experience.
