What The Role Is
The National Heritage Board (NHB) is responsible for preserving and promoting Singapore's cultural heritage. The Heritage Institutions division includes Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall (SYSNMH), Malay Heritage Centre (MHC) and Indian Heritage Centre (IHC), focused on safeguarding and sharing the stories of Singapore's diverse communities.
The Researcher will be part of the Research Unit (RU) supporting the Malay Heritage Centre (MHC) and Indian Heritage Centre (IHC). The Researcher contributes to original research that supports exhibitions, programmes, education, and public engagement. The role focuses on producing well-grounded research, working closely with community and industry partners, and ensuring research outcomes are translated into usable institutional outputs.
What You Will Be Working On
Reporting to the Head of Research Unit, you will conduct and coordinate research aligned with MHC and IHC's curatorial, programming, and collecting priorities. You will work on both desk-based and field research, collaborate with community partners, and support the development of content for MHC and IHC's exhibitions, publications, education, and digital platforms.
Key Areas of Responsibility
- Conduct original research on themes related to Singapore Malay and Indian heritage, aligned with institutional priorities.
- Coordinate and manage grants to support 3rd party research on Singapore Malay and Indian heritage.
- Develop clear, well-documented research outputs to support exhibitions, programmes, educational initiatives, and outreach activities.
- Collaborate with community groups, practitioners, and industry partners on commissioned research and documentation projects.
- Facilitate oral history projects, archival research, fieldwork, and documentation of intangible Cultural Heritage.
- Contribute to reports, articles, research dossiers, and other public-facing materials that disseminate research findings
- Enhance capacity-building efforts, including mentoring students or community researchers as required.

Work Experiences And Knowledge
- Background in heritage studies, history, anthropology, cultural studies, or a related field
- Relevant experience in research, cultural studies, heritage documentation, or a related field (Preferably at least 3 years of relevant experience is preferred)
- Strong knowledge of archival research, oral history methods, and qualitative research techniques, particularly in intangible cultural heritage and community-driven research
- Good communication and writing skills, capable of producing clear, concise research reports and contributing to public-facing content
