Lead experimental R&D for locomotion subsystems: manta-ray-like fin propulsion. Responsibilities include mechanical and actuator design, prototype fabrication, control development, hydrodynamic and energy characterisation (tank/flume tests), development of experiment protocols, coordination with integration, mentoring junior staff, preparing deliverables and technical reports, and supporting sea trials. Expect frequent lab/tank work and periodic field deployments. Contribute to publications and IP disclosures as appropriate.
Essential:
o PhD in Robotics, Mechanical/Mechatronics/Marine Engineering, or related field.
o Hands-on experience in design, prototyping and experimental validation of robotic locomotion systems.
o Strong background in dynamics, compliant mechanisms, actuators and control for fin-propelled robots.
o Proficiency with CAD, mechanical fabrication oversight, instrumentation and experimental testing.
o Good technical writing and communication skills ability to lead and mentor junior staff.
Desirable:
o Experience in underwater pressure housings, sealing, and depth-rated design (100 m).
o CFD or experimental hydrodynamics (PIV, drag testing).
o Familiarity with ROS, embedded controllers, and energy management strategies.
o Track record of relevant publications
