Job Description
Invitation to apply. The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Department of the Built Environment at the National University of Singapore (NUS) invite applications for one Research Fellow (Postdoctoral) position in Weather Science and Machine Learning to begin as soon as possible.
The project titled Predicting Convective Hazards in the Maritime Continent aims to enhance both understanding and forecasting of extreme convective hazards by integrating multi-source observational data, numerical weather prediction (NWP) model outputs, and nowcasting models, with a strong focus on machine learning-based post-processing and forecast interpretability. The project is conducted under the Weather Science Research Programme (WSRP) of the Climate and Weather Research Alliance Singapore (CAWRAS)
Qualifications. We are looking for a candidate with a Ph.D. degree (or conclusion expected within 2-3 months) in Atmospheric Science, Meteorology, Hydrology, Machine Learning, Physics or related disciplines. The candidate should possess specific and broad knowledge of data analytics related to spatial-temporal weather and/or hydrological fields and machine learning experience. Candidates with a multi-disciplinary background are welcome, but strong knowledge of hydrometeorological processes, remote sensing and reanalysis products, as well as programming skills (e.g., Matlab, or Python, Julia) are required. Previous experiences in international contexts are also positively evaluated. The candidate is expected to be a highly organized and proactive person and able to work both in a team and independently. Demonstration of innovative scientific results obtained during (and/or after) the Ph.D. and communication skills are important elements of evaluation. A proficient command of oral/written English is essential.
Responsibilities. The candidate will be responsible for completing the scientific tasks related to analysis of convective storms and specifically convection initiation in the project, leading and contributing to publications, and is expected to work closely with other colleagues in the project. Besides contributing to the research activities of the project, the successful applicant is expected to occasionally support graduate students (M.Sc. and Ph.D.).
Terms of appointment. The successful candidate will be offered a Research Fellow position for 18 months with possibility of an extension. The contract conditions follow the National University of Singapore regulations. Working conditions are excellent and Singapore is an attractive city rated very high in terms of life quality and living standards. Salary is competitive when compared to similar positions abroad.
How to apply
Application procedure. Applications should include in a single PDF file: (i) a motivation letter (one page max), (ii) a detailed Curriculum Vitae including a list of publications, and (iii) contacts of 2-3 referees (including the candidate's PhD supervisor). Applications should be submitted at the following link: https://www.dropbox.com/request/6A39jEoXNTBId4gZtEBz. Shortlisted applications will be asked to participate in an interview that will take place in person or over a video conference system.
Additional information about the position may be obtained by writing to Simone Fatichi ([Confidential Information]) and Lup Wai Chew ([HIDDEN TEXT]). Screening for the position will start on January 30th and the position will remain open until filled. The expected appointment date is the earliest possible following the committee's decision and administrative processing.
