Project Title: The Impact of Multilingualism and Multiculturalism on Singaporean Mandarin: The Case of the Singaporean Mandarin Database
Project Introduction:
Launched by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong during the 40th Anniversary of the Speak Mandarin Campaign in 2019, the Singaporean Mandarin Database research project had developed a lexicon for Singapore Mandarin through a compilation of 1,000 commonly used Singaporean Mandarin terms.
Further research work is required to uncover the unique characteristics of Singaporean Mandarin terms. As Singapore is a widely acknowledged linguistic lab, the influence on language use by the localized linguistic and cultural conditions and impact could be further studied. This project attempts to study, with the aid of technology and AI, the wealth of multilingual and multicultural influences in such etymology.
