Job Description

EOS is a University Research Institute at Nanyang Technological University that conducts fundamental research on earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, and climate change in and around Southeast Asia, towards safer and more sustainable societies. For more information on EOS please visit http://www.earthobservatory.sg.

The Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) seeks a Research Fellow to work on rapid and accurate quantification of disasters using remote sensing and space geodesy. They will also advance InSAR processing algorithms to optimise change detection capability in Southeast Asia, where SAR analysis is complicated by tropospheric and ionospheric effects, dense vegetation, and soil moisture.

The candidate will work under the supervision of Associate Prof Sang-Ho Yun and will collaborate with the researchers from the Integrating Volcano and Earthquake Science and Technology (InVEST) in Southeast Asia project, a 5-year project that aims to provide a holistic understanding of regional tectonics, volcanoes, the linkages between the two, and their cascading hazards and impacts in Singapore and Southeast Asia. We will be hiring a large number of research staff and students to work on this project, so it promises to be a very exciting time to join our team!

Successful candidates will have a PhD degree in a relevant field, expertise in processing and modelling geodetic data using open-source analysis tools, and a demonstrated track record of impactful research publications in topics related to the position. As position requires stakeholder engagement in English, they will also have strong English communication skills, the ability to write code using Python or MATLAB, the desire and ability to work as part of a multicultural team, and a demonstrated ability for creating intellectual value. Additionally, the successful candidate will be part of the large and interdisciplinary research teams at EOS, the Asian School of the Environment (ASE), and the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE), helping to develop algorithms and systems for disaster mapping and understanding geohazards in collaboration with space industries and responding agencies around the world. They will collaborate with the geodesy group and many other groups at EOS/ASE.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Rapid generation of disaster maps (deformation and damage proxy) for earthquakes and volcanic activities
  • Contribute to upgrading a disaster response support system for more effective and efficient response support
  • Engaging in collaborative discussions with the large number of team members and collaborators for InVEST

Job Requirements:

  • PhD in geophysics, geology, geomatics, geodesy, geomatics, electrical engineering, computer science, natural hazards, or a related field
  • Demonstrated skills in remote sensing, image processing, inverse problem, machine learning
  • Expertise in the analysis of a wide range of geospatial and geodetic data sets
  • Strong expertise in programming with Python or MATLAB
  • As position requires stakeholder engagement in English, candidate must have excellent written and oral communication skills in English

Interested applicants should submit a CV, list of publications, research statement, diversity and inclusivity statement. For additional information please email Assoc. Prof. Sang-Ho Yun at [Confidential Information]. Applications will be reviewed on an ongoing basis.

EOS seeks a diverse and inclusive workforce and is committed to equality of opportunity. We welcome applications from all and recruit on the basis of merit, regardless of age, race, gender, religion, marital status, family responsibilities, or disability.

We regret that only shortlisted candidates will be notified.
