Job Description

The Asian School of the Environment (ASE) at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) is an interdisciplinary school focusing on the connections between geosciences, ecology, society and Earth systems. Our approach integrates these disciplines to examine big hazards and environmental challenges both in Southeast Asia and globally. We conduct cutting-edge research on topics that include geohazards, climate change, sea-level rise, environmental sustainability, conservation of environment and biodiversity, and interactions between environment and society.

We seek a Research Fellow to work on using dense seismic arrays, particularly distributed acoustic sensing (DAS), for hazards and coastal monitoring.

The candidate will work under the supervision of Asst Prof Voon Hui Lai. The successful candidate should demonstrate expertise in seismic data processing and modelling, dense array analysis, distributed acoustic sensing, and seismoacoustics, and a strong track record of publishing impactful research in areas relevant to the position.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop methodologies to detect, characterize, and model seismic, coastal hazards and other environmental signals recorded on dense seismic and fibre-optic sensing data

  • Plan and conduct field deployments using seismic and distributed acoustic sensing systems

  • Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present results at national and international conferences

  • Provide scientific leadership and mentorship to undergraduate students, Research Assistants, and Research Associates, supporting their research development while fostering a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performing research environment.

  • Build and maintain effective collaborations with project team members, researchers, and external partners, contributing to research planning, scientific discussions, and the successful achievement of project objectives and deliverables.

Job Requirements:

  • PhD in Earth science, geophysics, or a related field.

  • Demonstrated expertise in seismic source detection, seismoacoustics, signal processing, waveform modelling, and/or environmental seismology.

  • Proven experience in the analysis and interpretation of dense seismic array data and/or distributed acoustic sensing.

  • Proven experience planning and conducting geophysical field deployments.

  • Strong programming skills in Python or MATLAB.

  • Strong track record of publishing research relevant to the position in leading Tier 1 journals

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, as the position requires engagement with stakeholders in an international research environment.

  • Proven ability to prepare scientific manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals and present research findings at international conferences.

  • Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research while working effectively in a multidisciplinary and collaborative team environment.

Interested applicants should submit a CV, research statement, list of referees, and list of publications and their relevance to position. For additional information, please email Asst. Prof. Voon Hui Lai at . Applications will be reviewed on an ongoing basis.

We seek a diverse and inclusive workforce and is committed to equality of opportunity. We welcome applications from all and recruit on the basis of merit, regardless of age, race, gender, religion, marital status, family responsibilities, or disability.

We regret to inform you that only shortlisted candidates will be notified.
