Job Description

The National University of Singapore invites applications for Research Fellow in the Department of Ophthalmology, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. The Department of Ophthalmology at the National University of Singapore (NUS) is a leading academic centre advancing eye health through innovative research, clinical excellence, and education.

Our research focuses on ocular epidemiology, visual impairment, and age-related eye diseases such as myopia, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and age-related macular degeneration. We leverage large population-based studies to inform prevention strategies and public health policy across Asia.

We are also at the forefront of digital health and generative AI in ophthalmology, developing automated screening tools, predictive models, and advanced analytics to enhance early detection and precision care. Our strengths in ocular imaging-including retinal imaging and imaging biomarkers-support translational research that bridges data science and clinical impact.

We welcome talented researchers and clinicians who are passionate about shaping the future of eye care through interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation. Appointments will be made on a 12 months contract basis with the possibility of extension.

Purpose of the post

The Research Fellow will be responsible for supporting the successful execution of assigned research projects, working closely with the Principal Investigator and study team members. The role ensures that project milestones and deliverables are completed efficiently, accurately, and within the stipulated timelines.

Main duties and responsibilities

The Research Fellow will:

  1. Work closely with the Principal Investigator (PI) to design, implement, and manage research projects.
  2. Lead and coordinate specific components of the study to ensure timely completion of milestones and deliverables.
  3. Conduct data collection, management, and analysis, including statistical or computational modelling where appropriate.
  4. Contribute to the development and application of digital health tools, AI models, or imaging analyses (where relevant to the project).
  5. Prepare manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals and present findings at local and international conferences.
  6. Assist in grant writing, progress reports, and regulatory submissions.
  7. Supervise and mentor junior researchers, students, or research assistants.
  8. Ensure compliance with institutional ethics, data governance, and research integrity standards.
  9. Collaborate with internal and external partners to facilitate multidisciplinary research initiatives.

Qualifications

The applicant should:

  1. Holds a PhD in medicine/ ophthalmology/ vision science or clinical-domain or related disciplines
  2. Experiences in vision research is preferred
  3. be able to work independently and in a team, have an investigative nature, attention to detail
  4. have knowledge of computer applications, e.g. SPSS, MS office, PowerPoint
