Project Title: Developing 21CC through arts-based embodied learning processes
Project Introduction: This pilot research project aims to develop an arts-based embodied learning programme to complement the teaching and learning of social-emotional competencies highlighted in the Character and Citizenship Syllabus (CCE) for Primary School with an explicit alignment to the 21st Century Competencies (21 CC). In particular, the arts-based embodied learning programme focuses on fostering empathetic and inclusive behaviours and dispositions in students from the lower primary levels in mainstream Singapore schools to build better sense of self, self-management and interpersonal relationships.
The ten-week arts-based embodied learning programme in this study will be adapted from the current Drama programme written for PAL in the lower primary levels, and it will draw on the embodied processes from across the four broad genres of music, drama, dance/movement and visual art. There are two stages in the research project:
Stage 1: The adaptation of the arts-based embodied learning programme from the current Drama programme written for PAL and the professional development of teachers to be equipped with knowledge and skills in arts-based embodied learning processes Stage 2: The implementation of the ten-week arts-based embodied learning programme in the lower primary classrooms.
Lasting over a 24-month period, researchers in this project will work actively with teachers in school(s) to develop and evaluate the efficacy of the arts-based embodied learning programme in fostering empathetic and inclusive behaviours and attitudes in children in the lower primary levels.
