Job Description

The National University of Singapore invites applications for position of Research Associate in the Department of Ophthalmology, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. Appointments will be made on a 1 year contract basis in the first instance, with the possibility of extension.

Purpose of the post: The Research Associate will join my research team focusing on trustworthy multimodal artificial intelligence for healthcare. The successful candidate will contribute to the development of next-generation medical AI systems, with a particular focus on vision-language foundation models, multimodal learning across medical imaging modalities (e.g., fundus, OCT, MRI), and clinically deployable AI solutions. The position offers a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of cutting-edge AI research and real-world clinical translation.

Main duties and responsibilities:

Conduct research on medical image analysis, multimodal learning, and vision-language models

  • Develop and implement deep learning models using frameworks such as PyTorch
  • Work with large-scale medical datasets, including data preprocessing, curation, and evaluation
  • Collaborate with clinicians and interdisciplinary teams to design clinically relevant AI solutions
  • Contribute to research publications in top-tier journals and conferences (e.g., MICCAI, CVPR, TMI)
  • Assist in project coordination and support grant-related research activities

Qualifications

The applicant should:

(a) Hold a Master's degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, or a related field, with a strong academic record

(b) Have strong programming skills in Python and experience in machine learning and data analysis (e.g., PyTorch, scikit-learn, pandas, NumPy), with solid foundations in statistical modeling and inference

(c) Demonstrate hands-on experience in developing AI systems or applications (e.g., AI agents, knowledge-based systems, or full-stack AI platforms), with the ability to translate algorithms into practical solutions

(d) Possess experience in software development (e.g., web technologies, system design, or scalable applications), which is advantageous for building deployable AI tools

(e) Show strong analytical thinking and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary research environment

(f) Have prior exposure to research activities (e.g., publications, research projects, or mathematical modeling competitions), which will be considered a strong advantage

(g) Have good written and verbal communication skills in English.

Remuneration will be commensurate with the candidate's qualifications and experience.
