Job Description

The Research Assistant - Japan Equities role offers an opportunity to join a Singapore-based long/short hedge fund specialising in Japanese equity investments. Working within the Japan equity investment team under a hybrid arrangement, the position supports equity research across Japanese and global equities and provides a clear path towards promotion to an investment analyst role within a few years, subject to performance.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct fundamental research on Japanese-listed companies by reviewing earnings releases, investor relations materials, and regulatory filings, including annual reports, to identify investment opportunities and risks

  • Collect and maintain accurate financial data, key performance metrics, and company guidance

  • Build and maintain financial models to analyse company performance, valuations, and market trends

  • Provide research and administrative support to investment analysts

  • Monitor and analyse macroeconomic indicators and market developments relevant to the Japanese equity market

  • Support the investment team's research activities, with the potential for responsibilities to expand to investment idea generation and direct engagement with company management following progression to an investment analyst role

Requirements

  • Advanced Japanese language proficiency at JLPT N1 level or equivalent, with the ability to read Japanese financial documents and communicate with Japanese-speaking stakeholders

  • Bachelor's degree or higher

  • At least 1 year of experience in Japanese equity research on the buy-side or sell-side, or as a research assistant

  • Advanced Excel skills, including data handling, functions, and financial analysis

  • Strong understanding of accounting principles, financial statements, including profit and loss statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements, and valuation methodologies

  • Strong analytical and financial modelling skills

  • Ability to work accurately and efficiently in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment

  • Independent and proactive approach, with strong teamwork skills

  • High level of attention to detail, accuracy, and accountability

  • CFA charterholder status or current pursuit of the CFA qualification will be an advantage
