Job Description

We are seeking a motivated Research Assistant to support an ongoing research project examining youth mental health and well-being in relation to everyday technology use. The project adopts a sociotechnical and participatory approach, focusing on how young people (teens and young adults) experience, interpret, and reflect on digital technologies in their daily lives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead qualitative research activities, including participant recruitment, interview scheduling, conducting semi-structured interviews, and managing study logistics
  • Plan and run co-design workshops and youth-centered participatory sessions (synchronous/asynchronous), including facilitation, documentation, and synthesis
  • Develop, iterate, and deploy design prototypes (low- to mid-fidelity, and where appropriate higher-fidelity) to support study activities and research interventions, coordinate prototype testing and data collection
  • Conduct thematic analysis and interpretation of qualitative data (e.g., interviews, workshop artifacts), including coding and insight generation
  • Design and administer surveys (as needed) and conduct preliminary analysis
  • Conduct literature reviews on youth mental health, digital well-being, and related HCI/CSCW research
  • Prepare research materials (e.g., study protocols, consent/assent forms, interview guides), support IRB/ethics documentation, and contribute to academic outputs (papers, reports, presentations)

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Undergraduate or graduate student (or recent graduate) in Design, HCI, Psychology, Social Sciences, Public Health, or a related field
  • Strong interest in youth mental health, digital well-being, and sociotechnical research
  • Excellent facilitation, communication, and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and take ownership of research activities

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience conducting interviews and facilitating workshops (especially with youth populations)
  • Experience with prototyping tools/workflows (e.g., Figma, mobile prototyping, interactive systems, or equivalent)
  • Familiarity with qualitative analysis methods and tools (e.g., NVivo or similar), and/or survey tools
