Job Description

The Centre for Nature-based Climate Solutions (CNCS) at the National University of Singapore (NUS) is seeking is seeking a highly motivated Research Assistant to support and improve carbon stock estimations in tropical forests. The appointment is for an initial period of one year with the possibility of renewal.

The Main Responsibilities Of The Position Include

  • Conduct literature reviews, data collection and analysis
  • Organise and coordinate a team to perform fieldwork sessions
  • Survey and report aboveground carbon stocks in terrestrial forest habitats using methods such as but not limited to:
  • Tree inventory methods
  • Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS)
  • Drone flights to collect Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) and/or photogrammetry data
  • Contribute to the design and creation of workflows for carbon monitoring
  • Assist in preparing research manuscript and reports
  • Provide general administrative support on research-related matters such as equipment procurement and budget reporting
  • Assist with other related duties and responsibilities as required to support the team and the Centre

Qualifications / Discipline

  • Bachelor's degree (Life Sciences, Environmental Studies, or related field preferred)

Skills

  • Interest in pioneering/ improving methods for carbon monitoring and reporting
  • Strong problem-solving skills, self-motivated, able to work independently as well as in an interdisciplinary team
  • Proficiency in R, python or other coding languages for data analyses
  • Tree species identification skills would be highly advantageous
  • Proficiency in QGIS, CloudCompare, DJI Terra and other remote sensing software would be advantageous

Experience

  • Experience and comfort working for long hours in tropical forest environments
  • Experience with forest inventory work including DBH measurement, tree tagging and height measurements
  • Prior experience with remote sensing data collection and LiDAR data processing would be advantageous
