About this role:
Remote Assistance Dispatch (RAD) is the live decision-support layer between self-driving system and real-world operations. As a 24/7 team, RAD provides real-time guidance when an autonomous vehicle encounters an uncertain or complex situation †such as unusual traffic patterns, temporary road closures, or rider-specific requests that require human judgment.
RAD agents act as quick-thinking navigators and safety stewards, making split-second decisions that ensure rider comfort, operational efficiency, and public safety.
They analyze real-time data, assess situational context, and deliver clear instructions to keep vehicles moving safely and confidently †serving as the human-in-the-loop extension of Waymo's driving intelligence.
Roles & Responsibilities
Real-Time Decision Support: Monitor live assist requests from vehicles and provide timely, safety-driven guidance to resolve road, navigation, or rider-related challenges.
Situational Awareness & Judgment: Rapidly assess visual and sensor data to determine safe and efficient next steps, balancing risk, environment, and system cues.
Safety & Compliance: Ensure all guidance aligns with Waymo's safety protocols and escalation criteria, while maintaining accurate documentation for audit and performance tracking.
Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with Engineering, Product, and Operations to surface recurring system behaviors and identify improvement opportunities.
Continuous Learning : Participate in skill calibration, simulation drills, and feedback sessions to enhance decision quality, accuracy, and speed.
Global Scalability: Support consistent, high-quality, safety-driven remote assistance across all markets and languages.
Key Activities
Respond instantly to assist requests and analyze live vehicle feeds to identify context and the best path forward.
Provide concise, precise instructions to vehicles or riders to ensure continuity of service and safety.
Document each assist interaction accurately, flagging anomalies or repeat patterns for review.
Participate in real-time coordination during unusual operational events or emergencies, escalating when thresholds are met.
Collaborate with quality and training teams to refine response scripts, tools, and situational playbooks.
Engage in periodic certification and readiness assessments to maintain high performance in decision speed, accuracy, and safety adherence.
Candidate Profile
The ideal RAD agent is a quick, confident decision-maker who can process complex information in seconds and provide clear, safety-first guidance under pressure.
They think and act like an air-traffic controller or mission operator, constantly assessing data, anticipating outcomes, and communicating precisely.
This role requires exceptional focus, composure, and situational awareness, as RAD agents operate in a live, safety-critical environment where every decision directly affects rider experience and public trust.
The best candidates are calm, decisive, and thrive in fast-moving, technology-driven operations.
