Regional Marine Cargo Underwriter

About the Opportunity

Our client is seeking an experienced Marine Cargo Underwriter to join its Regional Marine team based in Singapore. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a global specialty insurance platform, supporting complex commercial risks across Asia and working closely with brokers, clients, and multinational stakeholders.

The successful candidate will play a key role in underwriting profitable Marine Cargo business, managing broker relationships, and contributing to the continued growth and development of the regional portfolio.

Key Responsibilities

Underwriting & Portfolio Management

  • Underwrite new and renewal Marine Cargo risks in accordance with underwriting guidelines, risk appetite, and delegated authority.
  • Assess and price risks through detailed analysis of exposure, loss history, coverage requirements, and market conditions.
  • Develop and manage a profitable Marine Cargo portfolio across the region.
  • Monitor portfolio performance and implement corrective actions where necessary to achieve underwriting profitability targets.
  • Structure policy terms, conditions, and coverage solutions tailored to client requirements.

Business Development & Broker Management

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with regional and local brokers, clients, and business partners.
  • Identify new business opportunities and contribute to portfolio growth initiatives.
  • Participate in broker meetings, client visits, industry events, and market engagements.
  • Collaborate with distribution teams to strengthen market presence and enhance business retention.

Risk Assessment & Technical Excellence

  • Evaluate complex cargo exposures across various industries and trade sectors.
  • Review risk information, survey reports, and technical documentation to support underwriting decisions.
  • Provide technical underwriting expertise and guidance to internal stakeholders.
  • Stay informed of market trends, industry developments, geopolitical factors, and emerging risks impacting global trade and cargo transportation.

Collaboration & Regional Support

  • Work closely with regional underwriting, claims, risk engineering, and portfolio management teams.
  • Support underwriting initiatives, product development activities, and regional projects where required.
  • Contribute to portfolio reviews, reporting activities, and strategic planning discussions.
  • Ensure compliance with internal governance standards, underwriting guidelines, and regulatory requirements.

Requirements

  • Degree-qualified in Insurance, Business, Maritime Studies, Logistics, Finance, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 5 years of Marine Cargo underwriting experience gained within commercial insurance, specialty insurance, or reinsurance environments.
  • Strong technical knowledge of Marine Cargo insurance products, policy wordings, and international trade exposures.
  • Demonstrated ability to underwrite and manage profitable portfolios.
  • Established relationships within the broker market will be highly advantageous.
  • Strong analytical, negotiation, and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities.
  • Comfortable operating within a regional and multinational environment.
