Job Description

Role Purpose

To provide field assurance through shipboard verification, coaching, training, audits and observations, confirming whether the Safety Management System and company expectations are effectively implemented on board and feeding emerging risks, recurring findings and improvement opportunities back into the Marine & QHSE assurance framework. To be the frontline assurance and verification resource.

Role Accountabilities

Ship Visits, Audits & Verification of Implementation

  • Conduct shipboard audits, inspections and verification visits to assess compliance with ISM, ISPS, MLC, IMO Conventions, applicable regulations, navigational safety, the company SMS, RightShip RISQ requirements, and relevant industry best practices.
  • Verify whether shipboard work practices, operational controls and SMS requirements are understood, practical and effectively implemented by ship staff.
  • Identify non-conformities, observations, unsafe conditions and improvement opportunities, and support Masters and shipboard teams in defining practical corrective and preventive actions.
  • Prepare and submit clear, evidence-based reports of audits, inspections, training and investigations in a timely manner.

Onboard Coaching, Training & Safety Culture

  • Conduct onboard training and coaching on general safety awareness, emergency preparedness, environmental management, SMS requirements, cargo care and industry best practices.
  • Use shipboard interactions and observations to reinforce safe work practices, operational discipline and effective implementation of company policies.
  • Advise the General Manager, Marine & QHSE, DPA and QHSE Managers on training needs of officers and crew based on audit findings and shipboard engagement.

Emerging Risks, Investigations & Feedback Loop

  • Conduct or support accident and incident investigations on board as directed, determine root causes and recommend corrective and preventive actions.
  • Identify recurring findings, weak signals and emerging risks from ship visits, audits and observations, and provide feedback to QHSE Managers for fleet-wide analysis and improvement.
  • Support dissemination of lessons learned through reports, briefings and other approved channels where required.

Campaigns, Projects & Continuous Improvement

  • Assist with targeted assurance campaigns, SMS implementation checks and other improvement projects as directed by the General Manager, Marine & QHSE, DPA and/or QHSE Managers.
  • Provide practical shipboard feedback to support improvement of procedures, forms, training materials and fleet communication.
  • Maintain cost and schedule discipline when planning and executing ship visits, audits and training assignments.

Crisis Management

  • Make every effort to be aware of and understand your role in the event of a crisis.
  • Make every effort to attend any relevant training, simulations and or meetings relating to Crisis Management.
  • Perform your role as best as possible in a calm and collaborative manner in line with the relevant policy and procedures in the event of a Crisis.
  • Provide input and feedback towards the ongoing improvement of the Crisis Management framework and procedure.

Safety

  • Take responsibility for the safety of myself and those around me by displaying safety leadership principles (i.e., Safety I's & Accountability ladder).
  • Challenging and stopping unsafe acts and behaviors or unsafe conditions.
  • Comply with the Global Safety Standards, Policies and Operating Procedures.

Key Qualifications & Skills (What knowledge will ensure success in the role)

Qualifications

  • Class 1 Master Mariner Certificate of Competency from a recognised Maritime Administration.
  • 1 to 2 years of rank experience as Master on bulk carriers or multipurpose/container ships.
  • Relevant shore based experience in auditing or training.

Technical Skills

  • A minimum of 10 years total sea service and have held Master's position for a minimum of one year.
  • It is desirable that applicant should have attended an approved management system auditing training course and an approved risk assessment and incident investigation training course.

Professional Skills

  • A good team player with a positive attitude and motivation to succeed in a dynamic environment.
  • Good communication skills in written and spoken English and ability to prepare and deliver presentations and interpersonal skills.
  • Problem solving skills.
  • Proficient in the application of various Microsoft applications.
