The Property Risk Engineer, APAC will serve as a trusted technical partner to the Property underwriting team, providing risk assessments, engineering insights, and loss prevention expertise to support underwriting decisions and improve portfolio performance.
Working closely with underwriters, brokers, clients, and risk management professionals, the successful candidate will assess complex property risks, identify emerging exposures, evaluate loss potential, and develop practical risk improvement solutions that enhance risk quality and contribute to profitable underwriting outcomes.
The role will also play an important part in strengthening Sompo's risk engineering capabilities across APAC through technical leadership, knowledge sharing, market engagement, and portfolio risk insights.

Key Responsibilities
Underwriting Partnership & Portfolio Development
- Partner with Property Underwriters throughout the underwriting lifecycle by providing timely and technically sound risk engineering assessments.
- Support new business opportunities, portfolio growth initiatives, and renewal strategies through independent risk evaluation and technical analysis.
- Evaluate risk quality, loss potential, and risk improvement opportunities to support underwriting profitability.
- Provide engineering input into pricing, coverage considerations, risk selection, and portfolio management decisions.
- Identify trends, emerging risks, and accumulation exposures that may impact portfolio performance.
Property Risk Assessment & Surveys
- Conduct desktop risk assessments, engineering reviews, and on-site surveys for commercial and industrial risks throughout APAC.
- Assess construction, occupancy, protection, and exposure (COPE) characteristics and evaluate operational hazards.
- Analyze risks relating to fire protection, business interruption, supply chain dependency, natural catastrophes, equipment breakdown, and security exposures.
- Quantify probable maximum loss (PML) and maximum foreseeable loss (MFL) scenarios where appropriate.
- Review broker reports, client engineering reports, and third-party assessments to support underwriting decisions.
Loss Prevention & Risk Improvement
- Develop practical and commercially viable risk improvement recommendations that enhance risk quality and reduce loss frequency and severity.
- Partner with clients and brokers to discuss loss prevention strategies and support implementation of risk improvement measures.
- Evaluate fire protection systems, emergency response arrangements, business continuity plans, and operational resilience programs.
- Monitor and track risk improvement progress across key accounts.
Claims & Loss Analysis
- Provide engineering support on significant property losses and claims investigations.
- Review historical losses and claims trends to identify risk drivers and underwriting considerations.
- Perform root-cause analysis on major losses and support lessons-learned reviews.
- Share findings across underwriting and risk engineering teams to strengthen future risk selection and management practices.
Technical Leadership & Knowledge Development
- Maintain current knowledge of property engineering practices, emerging technologies, industry standards, and evolving risk management techniques.
- Develop and maintain technical resources, risk engineering guidance, and best-practice documentation for APAC Property teams.
- Deliver training sessions and technical workshops for underwriters, claims professionals, brokers, and clients.
- Contribute to Sompo's risk engineering thought leadership through market insights, technical papers, and industry engagement.
Client & Market Engagement
- Build strong relationships with clients, brokers and industry stakeholders.
- Represent Sompo as a trusted technical advisor during client meetings, broker engagements, and industry events.
- Enhance Sompo's reputation as a technically sophisticated insurer with strong risk management capabilities.
- Support business development initiatives through risk engineering expertise and client-facing engagement.
Qualifications & Experience
Education
- Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Civil, Industrial Engineering, or related discipline.
- Professional engineering accreditation or equivalent qualifications preferred.
Experience
- 10+ years of experience in risk engineering, property engineering, loss prevention, industrial operations, or property insurance.
- Experience assessing complex commercial and industrial property risks.
- Strong understanding of property underwriting principles and risk engineering methodologies.
- Experience working across multiple countries and cultures within APAC is highly desirable.
- Insurer, broker, engineering consultancy, industrial manufacturing, power generation, or loss prevention background preferred.
Technical Knowledge
- Strong knowledge of commercial and industrial property risks.
- Experience evaluating fire, explosion, natural catastrophe, machinery breakdown, and business interruption exposures.
- Understanding of COPE analysis, property loss estimation methodologies, and catastrophe risk considerations.
- Familiarity with international risk engineering standards including NFPA, FM Global, and relevant local regulatory requirements.
- Ability to assess complex operating environments and communicate findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.
