The Principal Lactation Consultant will provide specialist lactation support and clinical guidance to mothers, families, and the patient care team. The incumbent will be responsible for supporting breastfeeding care, providing patient education, and working closely with clinical teams to ensure safe, professional, and quality patient care.
Responsibilities:
- Provide education, guidance, and support to new mothers on breastfeeding and related care needs.
- Assess breastfeeding-related concerns and provide consultation to both inpatient and discharged mothers.
- Document interventions, patient responses, and the effectiveness of breastfeeding support provided.
- Coordinate appointment times and breastfeeding support sessions to ensure effective service delivery.
- Conduct antenatal breastfeeding and infant care-related classes as required.
- Manage and coordinate care for breastfeeding patients, including those with more complex needs.
- Serve as a clinical resource and advocate for patients, families, nursing staff, and physicians.
- Provide guidance, consultation, and support to new or junior lactation consultants where required.
- Collaborate with nursing leaders and clinical teams to support patient care planning and staff allocation where needed.
- Conduct in-service education and share current knowledge, research, and best practices relating to breastfeeding and lactation care.
- Liaise with relevant community resources and breastfeeding support organisations where appropriate.
- Support quality improvement initiatives in alignment with hospital goals and standards.
- Maintain a safe, clean, and professional care environment for patients.
- Promote teamwork and effective collaboration with nursing, medical, and other hospital staff.
- Perform any other duties as assigned by the Senior Nurse Clinician, Deputy Director, Chief Nurse, or management.
Requirements:
- Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing.
- Registered Nurse with a valid practising licence issued by the Singapore Nursing Board.
- Current International Board Certified Lactation Consultant certification is required.
- Licensed or qualified to practise as a Lactation Consultant.
- Relevant clinical nursing experience, preferably in inpatient, maternity, women's health, neonatal, or lactation-related care.
- Strong knowledge of breastfeeding management, patient education, and maternal-infant care.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to support mothers and families with empathy and professionalism.
- Able to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
- Committed to maintaining professional development and keeping updated on current lactation care practices.
