Job Summary
The Port Captain is responsible for supervising vesseloperations within assigned ports, ensuring compliance with maritimeregulations, company policies, and safety standards. The role involvescoordinating with ship crews, port authorities, and stakeholders to ensureefficient turnaround, cargo operations, and vessel readiness.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee daily operations of vessels calling at assigned ports
- Act as the company's representative onboard vessels and at port
- Ensure compliance with international maritime regulations (e.g., SOLAS, MARPOL) and local port rules
- Monitor cargo loading and unloading operations for safety and efficiency
- Conduct vessel inspections, audits, and safety checks
- Coordinate with port authorities, agents, terminal operators, and service providers
- Investigate incidents, accidents, or near-misses and prepare reports
- Support vessel masters and crew with operational guidance
- Ensure proper documentation for port calls, cargo, and regulatory compliance
- Monitor vessel performance, turnaround time, and cost efficiency
- Assist in crew management matters when required
Qualifications & Requirements
- Master Mariner license (Class 1) or equivalent certification
- Extensive seagoing experience as a ship captain or senior deck officer
- Strong knowledge of maritime laws, safety standards, and port operations
- Experience with cargo operations (bulk, tanker, container, or offshore depending on company)
- Excellent communication and coordination skills
- Ability to work under pressure and respond to emergencies
- Proficiency in maritime software and reporting tools
